We live in a technologically advanced world, and we keep adding new additions to our collection, but with new technology, comes new concerns and worries. As apps ask for more of our information, data, and even to monitor when we use the app, our privacy is invaded, but how far do we let it go?

Our privacy is already invaded on a daily basis , when we play on apps. use passwords and open bank accounts, we are always giving out our personal information, but when should we stop?

A new form of security has come to the forefront of the field, Biometrics.

Everyone's heard of them, or seen them in sci-fi movies as being a flawless technology, that has no fault and will make all our lives easier, but what do we really know about them? The media predominantly portrays biometrics as being an other-worldly technology which will be the height of our advancement! But at what cost?

Everything comes with a consequence and biometric security is no different from the rest.

When I first began looking into Biometric Security I realised that it isn't as perfect as I previously thought, and that, actually, I believed exactly what the Media wanted me to believe, that it was perfect. I used to encourage people that it was a new and flawless technology, convincing them to buy into this lie. Then I realised that I have only heard one side of the story, the good side, so I scoured the internet high and low, researching the pros and cons to Biometric Security and I found that they were equal, in their own respects. The cons did not out way the pros, and vice versa.

Biometric Security can be used as a force for good, to track criminals, find missing persons, and stop some crime, it could make our society a better and more trustworthy place to be. However, equally, it can be used against us, as a monitor on our everyday lives, after all we leave our fingerprints everywhere, how could they possible be used against us?

It is true we leave our fingerprints everywhere, whenever we touch something it is left there, and this make no impact on our lives, but when we digitally store the information that makes us, us, there are consequences. Where does this information go? How secure is it really?

What happens when someone, with not so good intentions, gets their hands on who we are?

At the moment our security and encryption levels are superior and advanced, but with the development of quantum computers hackers could steal your information quicker than ever before, even our highest level of encryption would be broken within minutes, and if your biometric information is stolen anything could go wrong. Maybe 10,15 years after your information was stolen, you no longer worry as you were assured it was safe and they would be able to stop this person, but when your bank is emptied, you can't prove it wasn't you. Your fingerprint was used, so in the eyes of the bank you emptied it and they aren't responsible.

They will leave you wondering how you'll get that meal on the table for your family tomorrow.

Or in another scenario, someone stole your fingerprints, 3D printed it onto gloves, commits a murder and you're the one doing the time, for a crime you did not commit. A whole new level of identity theft would exist, one where you can't stop it, you won't just be able to change your biometrics like you can a password, you are stuck left in the dirt as the people with power blame it on someone else. People who can hack your files can ruin your life until you are left behind, remember that enemy you had in school? Or that man you annoyed the other night? Or that rumour that you kissed that boys girlfriend?

These people could bring about a new fear of crime.

In the short term People will feel safer but after a while as hackers begin to steal your information, that safety will soon turn to fear. And with terror threats looming over the border, if biometrics is introduced across the nation, all they have to do is recruit the right people and the right hackers and they would be able to pull a Guy Fawkes on parliament. This new technology has too many holes, and holds too many chances for things to go drastically wrong.

So how far do we let it go? Do we let technology do what it wants? Do we let the people with power evade all blame for your problems? Do we buy into the lie that this world can be our Eden? Do we just let it go?

Advancement doesn't benefit us all.
