DATE: January 5, 2011 TO: Wake County School Board FROM: Residents of Savannah subdivision, aka Nodes 380.7/649.0 RE: Middle School Assignment We, the RESIDENTS OF PHASES 1,2, and 3 of the SAVANNAH subdivision, RESPECTFULLY REQUEST THAT NODE 380.7 BE ASSIGNED TO A MIDDLE SCHOOL BASE THAT IS A NEIGHBORHOOD SCHOOL. Phases I and II of our neighborhood go to separate schools from our phase (they are node 649.0); they attend 3 neighborhood schools in a logical feeder pattern. 380.7 has no feeder pattern, no neighborhood schools, and is currently being divided from their elementary peers by reassignment. We would like Phase III of Savannah, which has very few students (37 homes, many of which currently have no children), to continue to be assigned along with Carpenter Village’s students when they are assigned to a neighborhood middle school OR to be assigned alongside the rest of Savannah to W. Cary Middle School. Like Carpenter Village, children in our node currently attend Carpenter Elementary, East Cary Middle, and Panther Creek High Schools. IF CARPENTER VILLAGE IS REASSIGNED TO DAVIS DRIVE OR MILLS PARK MIDDLE, THE CHILDREN IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD WILL BE A TINY HANDFUL OF CHILDREN IN WESTERN WAKE STILL FORCED OUT OF OUR NEIGHBORHOOD TO GO TO SCHOOL IN EAST CARY, ONLY TO BE SHIPPED BACK FOR HIGH SCHOOL. WE ASK THAT YOU REASSIGN OUR NODE ALONG WITH CARPENTER VILLAGE’S NODES (379 AND 597) BECAUSE THIS IS OUR CHILDREN’S PEER GROUP; ALTERNATELY, REASSIGN THEM TO BE WITH WITH THE REST OF OUR SUBDIVISION. This will create logical feeder patterns, continuity, and neighborhood schools. If current proposals to move Carpenter Village’s nodes out of East Cary Middle, our small node will suffer the following: • NO SINGLE SCHOOLS FOR THE WHOLE SUBDIVISION (phases 1 and 2 are a separate node) • NO CONTINUITY WITH PEERS (most of Carpenter Elementary will go to Davis Drive Middle) • NO CONTINUITY FROM MIDDLE TO HIGH SCHOOL (most of East Cary’s students do not go on to Panther Creek) • NO NEIGHBORHOOD MIDDLE SCHOOL OPTION at all for our node. We understand that there is no year-round middle school in our neighborhood. But right now both of our middle school choices are far away from our neighborhood (Reedy Creek and East Cary); there are three that are much closer: Davis Drive, West Cary, and Mills Park. Since we are currently assigned to Carpenter Elementary, we would like our children to either a) stay with their peers and follow a feeder pattern with them or b) stay with their neighborhood peers and attend W. Cary and Panther Creek.
