President Sharon D. Herzberger has declared an edict that will officially shorten Janterm by three days, curbing the semester break between Janterm and the Spring semester from one week to one day. Furthermore roughly one week will be taken from winter break to accommodate for Whittier College's bad financial planning. This group aims to start a petition to re-examine this edict and find alternative solutions to address our financial deficit rather than cutting educational programs. Janterm is extremely important for Whittier College. It allows students to go abroad when many can't during the regular semester. Even on the school's website, Janterm is advertised as one of the unique gems that attracts students to Whittier. It's free, and students get the opportunity to participate in a more community oriented classroom experience than they normally would. With these changes to Janterm, this is all at risk. Finally, this edict was made with hardly any faculty or student input. Please do not let this essential part of the college fall by the wayside.
