Petition to Reinstate the Fourth Week of Janterm

President Sharon D. Herzberger has declared an edict that will officially shorten Janterm by three days, curbing the semester break between Janterm and the Spring semester from one week to one day. Furthermore roughly one week will be taken from winter break to accommodate for Whittier College's bad financial planning. This group aims to start a petition to re-examine this edict and find alternative solutions to address our financial deficit rather than cutting educational programs. Janterm is extremely important for Whittier College. It allows students to go abroad when many can't during the regular semester. Even on the school's website, Janterm is advertised as one of the unique gems that attracts students to Whittier. It's free, and students get the opportunity to participate in a more community oriented classroom experience than they normally would. With these changes to Janterm, this is all at risk. Finally, this edict was made with hardly any faculty or student input. Please do not let this essential part of the college fall by the wayside.

5 years ago Comments: As a Whittier College alumnus, I know firsthand the importance of the January interim class. The January class allows Whittier's students to focus time and efforts on a specific aspect of their field of study which gives the opportunity to be completely submerged into the field that they are pursuing. Whether this means traveling to Europe to view and review a play per day, delving into P Chem. with its long lab sessions, tapping into one's creativity to meet tough deadlines in a ceramics class, or traveling down the coast of Baja California on an active research vessel conducting studies of the flora and fauna. These types of activities and the "true-life" experiences that the students are exposed to during these Janterm courses are invaluable to the students and a key element of the curriculum that sets Whittier Collage apart from many of the other institutions of higher learning. Removal of these courses for any reason is undermining the core values of excellence that the reputation of Whittier College rests upon. Thank you for your time and consideration.
