Comments: Save Southampton Paediatric Cardiac Unit. What justification can there be for closing the second best unit in favour of one that is fourth from the bottom.

Comments: I am a parent of a child with TOF. Stopping paediatric cardiac surgery at Southampton General Hospital would be disasterous!! Our poorly children need familiarity and consistency. My daughter is familiar with SGH since being transferred there from birth, having open heart surgey at 3 weeks and again at 6 months. She'll need surgey again in the future and it would be awful for us to have cardiac checkups at this wonderful centre, to have to go to an unfamiliar hospital for her surgery. On top of everything, it would be more stress, financial burden, unfamiliarity for the child and their familes and uncertainty! SGH is ranked the 2nd best performing children's heart surgery centre in the country - this has to stand for something! STANDARDS ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAT FINANCIAL 'SAVINGS' LISTEN TO THE PARENTS OF CHILDREN WHO NEED CARDIAC SURGERY AS, UNTIL ONE GOES THROUGH IT AS A PARENT, ONE COULD NOT IMAGINE THE WORRY AND STRESS IT BRINGS. Less 'specialist centres' are not always better!!!

Comments: I think it is appalling that a unit that is ranked 2nd in the country for childrens cardiac surgery could face losing surgery due to this review. It is a fact that if this unit loses surgery, the care my son receives when facing surgery, will be worse as his unit is already providing the best care for him. He faces surgery every 4-5 years, so it will not be a one off event for him and will be a huge disruption to us as a family. DO NOT LET THIS HAPPEN.

Comments: My son, Dylan (12yrs old), was born with Truncus Arteriosus which is a very rare congenital heart defect. He has been treated at Southampton since he was 1 day old. The staff up there are amazing, if the centre was to close it would hit Dylan hard as he has behavoural problems, he would not be able to cope with the change. The centre may be ranked no2 in the review, its no1 in our family. I don't know how a centre of excellence can only be in 1 option.

Comments: The Southampton Unit should not be considered for closure when units in the lowest end of ranking are deemed to be safe. Why, when it is the 2nd highest cardiac centre in the country, be closed? It doesnt make sense!

Comments: Southampton has saved our son's life on multiple occasions; the treatment and care (for our son and us) has far surpassed that received at other hospitals we have been admitted to. I cannot understand why such an exceptional and successful centre is being considered for closure, rather than being used to share the knowledge and procedures throughout the country. The team works and should be enhanced, not split up. We are treated as individuals, our son is a person NOT a statistic. The staff are like our second family and always time is given for our concerns. The communication between wards/departments is far better than other establishments and noone 'washes their hands of you' when you no longer fall into their responsibilty. I cannot stress the disappointment and fear that envelopes our entire family that we are going to recieve worse treatment at all but one cardiac facility in the country should Southampton close. I cannot understand the reasoning behind the decisions being made.

Comments: Please please do not consider closing this unit for surgery. It has been ranked 2nd best in the whole country yet is still at high risk of closure, it is an absolute travesty of justice to think that this unit, which is a centre of excellence, may no longer be able to do what it is leading the way in.

Comments: To shut this unit would be horrendous and would be putting the lives of children in more danger than they are already in. The unit provides more support than you could ever imagine and the staff there are simply amazing. The surgeons are so brilliantly skilled and their expertise shines through in the lives of the children that have been saved by them. DO NOT SHUT OUR UNIT!!

Comments: I am the mum of a 5 year old girl who is treated on Oceanward. The team on this ward has got my daughter through 3 open heart surgeries and recoveries. Without the dedication, expertise and quality of their care, my daughter would not be here today. To lose surgeries at Oceanward, would mean that every childs life that uses the ward, present and future, then these young lives will be at more risk of not surviving an emergency transfer to another heart unit. Some families would be in financial crisis meaning they will have to move to the area where their new unit is. Leaving, family and friends behind. The children moving schools and leaving friends behind. Where is the justice in that?

Comments: How on earth can closure even be considered???? This unit provides an essential life saving service and the staff and facilities and indeed support is top quality. The team saved my son's life and also my friend's daughter and many thousands a year. It is outrageous that hospital managers keep their huge salaries and pointless jobs and units like this that save childrens lives are closed!
