1061 AnonymousJamaicans need to have more available public beaches

1065 Kurt J. AdamsThe fight for Winnifred's represents the front line of the fight for the future direction of the Jamaican tourist industry, and more specifically the fight to determine the future of Portland, the last unspoiled part of Jamaica.

1069 Graham SowaKeep the beach public, thats why tourists such as myself visit. I don't visit private beaches.
1070 H. Dale AndersonI am deeply concerned that seemingly helter-skelter mushrooming of hotel construction ravages the natural environment and threatens to deny ordinary Jamaicans the right and opportunity to enjoy aspects of the island's beauty. Creeping removal of easy or free access to our best beaches is a troubling example of such travesty.

1081 frank peetersI' ve been there in the early nineties several times and it's a beautiful place where foreigners can enjoy the real jamaica. Totally different from the gated resorts. Big up to the people of Fairy hill. Respect.

1086 AnonymousWhy must we seek to mash up the environment? Will the Government not listen? Dont our people deserve a nice public beach, cant we give the environment a chance?
1087 AnonymousAs laws are promulgated to ensure order in the society, ignoring the laws is the major problem in Jamaica as it means that there is chaos....ignoring is not the answer, but rather repealing is the route to go, where there is adequate discussions & alternatives presented & sound decisions made on the way forward. I would therefore agree with this petition based on the law, but also on my observations regarding how developed countries develop their country.... locals are still allowed to enjoy the beaches. Even where there is a hotel/tourist industry, the hotels are not built literally on the beaches, but in some cases, on the opposite side of the road, so the public can still enjoy the beach. I personally felt the impact of what we have been doing in Jamaica, when I was just recently driving down into St.Ann's Bay from the hills of Brown's Town & to my surprise could no longer enjoy the beautiful view of the sea & horizon, since the hotel there had simply put up a wall!! I then saw that Jamaicans could be imprisoned by this kind of development & it was very sobering.

1089 Sadie VaughanI agree that it is full time for us to stand up and protect our beaches and claim our spaces. If we are not careful, we will soon not be able to touch a beach on this Island, we shall only be able to point to some distant place and say, "that was a beach I used to go swimming at".
1090 Horace LevyThe behaviour of the government agencies is disgraceful. I fully support your efforts.
1091 Yolande Rattray WrightHow can we not have our beaches to enjoy when it is our country ???/
1092 Cordia WilliamsMy favourite beach . One of the most beautiful beaches in the Jamaica and perhaps the world should be left as it is to enjoyed by everyone .. rich or poor, local or tourist

1097 AnonymousAs a frequent visitor to Jamaica and Winnifred Beach I am shocked and appalled that this very special place is in danger of being robbed from the public. I am not against a strong tourist industry...but this place is a big part of what makes Portland unique for Jamaicans and visitors alike. Long live Winnifred Beach!
1098 Jennine LewisWinnifred beach has been beautiful the way it is for many years now. Every time I go back to Jamaica Winnifred is one sure spot that I must visit, and I have been going back for about 14 years now. The development is said to be unsustainable and there also seemt o be more negative impacts than positive in the long run. There are so many other places, so much land that is available and can be used to place these luxury villas elsewhere and leave Winnifred alone. The government is so greedy that they will destroy homes of animals, destroy land, destroy homes of Jamaican people, in order to build more places for tourism. Jamaica is beautiful, Winifred beach is beautiful, just the way it is. So please, find somewhere else to destroy.
1099 Mia VensterI came to discover Winnifred Beach many years ago. I live in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, which is considered a nice beach by tourists. Yet, I so much more prefer the pristine and down-to-earth environment and people of Winnifred. Please, Port Antonio, hold on to your diamond in the rough! Do not let development spoil this little paradise. If anything, charge the tourists in the neighboring hotels a small tax and fix the road leading to the beach!!! Now THAT would be a boost to your community and its' people. Mia Venster Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA
