Name: Steven Kvalheim on Jul 15, 2002State: WICountry: USComments: Also, the boats on blocks in the spring (April-May) need to be removed to accommodate early season fishing. Those who launch can generate from $2,000 - $3,000 per day in revenue on a "good" day and are being discriminated against because they don't spend the money for the slips. Let's face it, with a slip comes a gate pass, water, electricity, coffee and snacks, showers, clean jons, and the ability to park whever you damn well please! That's what they are paying for!!Flag

Name: Tom Foust on Jul 16, 2002State: ILCountry:Comments: SU Member. Ramps are so bad that I no longer launch at Waukegan. In addition to the lousy condition of the ramps, a channel needs dredged out. I churned the bottom making the turn to the east 50 feet south of the ramps, after launching there the one time this year. Stuck so hard that it stalled the motor and I had to pick the drive WAY up to get going again. I will not be back until changes are made, and I know at least 6-8 others who are launching elsewhere this year, and we are all 2-4 launches per month typically.Flag

Name: Dieter Johannsen on Jul 16, 2002State: ILCountry: USComments: We are lucky to have a world-class fishery right on our doorstep off of Waukegan. Unfortunately, the launch ramps are second class (that's being generous). You (the harbor master, and city of Waukegan) should be embarassed by the state of the launch ramps. They are dangerous both to body and vehicle. I have almost fallen on the wobbling concrete slabs. Surprisingly nobody has twisted an ankle or punctured a tire on the exposed support rods. I run a business and realize how important customer relations are. To me, Waukegan's two examples of Customer Relations- the launch ramps and parking lot attendant leave a sour taste in my mouth. The ramps are in sad shape, and it's a shame that Bill, the attendant was driven away by the antics of the management over at Waukegan Harbor. You guys need to get your act together!!!Flag

I can't say that I have ever heard of anyone else addressing this issue by way of a petition but I concur with your concerns. As they say, the squeaky wheel gets the grease! By the way, there are some grammatical errors in your petition but the content is appropriate. If I can figure out how to do it, I will email a corrected copy to you. EdFlag

Name: Guy Lopez on Jul 16, 2002State: ILCountry: USComments: I have to admit that I will be driving the extra distance to fish out of Northpoint to avoid the fee, the poor ramp and dock conditions and the difficulties using the fish cleaning station (although it is an excellent one, once you get there). I am sure this opinion is echoed by most of the fisherman that travel to Waukegan from points to the south. This amounts to a substantial amount of lost revenue if improvements are not made. I am willing to pay a fee to launch and save the drive to Winthrop Harbor provided the ramp will not endanger my rig, which is the case now.Flag

Name: James Bello, Sr. on Jul 16, 2002State: ARCountry: USComments: Although I have recently relocated to Arkansas, I have used this facility for many seasons; and, I agree that it has fallen into a terrible state of disrepair. It is even sometimes dangerous in terms of launching and boarding a boat due to the staionary design of the piers vs. the water level. In addition, boats are at risk for damage alongside the exposed pier ironwork. Not a very inviting situation to newcomers to the facility. I will be visiting the Waukegan Launch site several times a year since I still plan to fish for salmon. It certainly would be appreciated if the facility was improved, thus attracting more fisherman's dollars into the city of Waukegan's local business's economy. Regards, Jim Bello, Sr.Flag

Name: Michael Wehlus on Jul 16, 2002State: ILCountry: USComments: The launch ramps are way too steep. I have a big 25 ft boat which is pulling my Van into the lake with brakes engaged. I've seen launch ramps on fox lake and lake geneva were there is no decline for the towing vehicle only for the trailer. also floating piers would help. The boating community spend a lot of money in the local economy. improvements are necessary for continued support thanksFlag

Name: James Bello on Jul 17, 2002State: ILCountry: USComments: I also agree that when the city refurbished the parking lot they made a mistake and re-routed traffic which is still causing problems with boat loading and launching, getting to the fish cleaning station is a nightmare too. The docks are useless in my opinion and should be redone with floating docks to compensate for the lake's level. The better part of the launches are unable to handle boats more than 18' in lenght as they are too shallow. Also, the state of repair is appalling; cracked concrete, holes and too short an extension into the lake make large boat launching pure hell!Flag
