The Council should find cuts elsewhere in its budget, in particular by slashing unnecessary bureaucracy and the wasteful use of expensive management consultants.Flag

Name: Guraa Therese Bergkvist on Feb 3, 2010Comments: Please re consider cutting the Water of Leith Conservation Trust grant. I regularly walk along the Water of Leith and enjoy the improved access provided by the trust from the Union Canal down to the river. They do a brilliant job and should be supported.Flag

It would be a shame if many of these projects have to be cancelled because of this action.Flag

Name: Diana Swift on Feb 4, 2010Comments: The Trust is a fanatstic resource and its services must be retained with the continued financial suport of the Council. I attended a school trip as a parent helper to the Conservation Trust and it was a very enjoyable and enlightening trip. The children had a great time, learning about the wonderful animal and plant life on their doorstep.Flag

We both take advantage of the of the programmed events and would be concerned to see any reduction of this service in this excellent centre with its helpful staff.Flag

Name: Peter Freshwater on Feb 7, 2010Comments: Maintenance of the Water of Leith is vital to the health and well-being of the people of Edinburgh and of the visitors to the City. The Water of Leith Conservation Trust is vital to that maintenance, and adequate financial support from the City is vital to that work by and for the people of Edinburgh.Flag

Name: Sheila Masson on Feb 9, 2010Comments: Please don't cut funding to the Water of Leith Conservation Trust - without the dedicated staff and their army of volunteers (I am one of them) the Water of Leith would be an embarrassment to Edinburgh. Without us, the central waterway through Edinburgh would be clogged with litter, cans, bikes, tyres, shopping trolleys, tents, skateboards, construction cones, fridges, balls, plastic bags, frisbees and carpets - all of which I have personally helped remove from the water. We may fly under the radar with our work, but without us, the litter and detritus that is dumped in the Water of Leith will be plain to see - for locals, tourists and politicians alike.Flag

Name: Anonymous on Feb 9, 2010Comments: You should increase the budget not cut it . The Water of Leith needs to be looked after so future generations can enjoy it. It offers sanctuary to wildlife and people. The pleasure, relaxation, recreation that people get from the parts of the river that are nice makes them healthier and happier and therefore less likely to be off work or in hospital with physical illnesses or mental health problems both of which cost the government more. Prevention is better than cure whether it's illness in people or in the river.Flag

Name: Susan Bittker on Feb 9, 2010Comments: The Water of Leith Walkway is a crucial resource - I have walked part of it nearly every day for several years. it's rare to have such an opportunity for wild exploration so easily accessible within the centre of a major city. The Water of Leith Walkway Trust makes excellent use of volunteers to do their important work. DON'T CUT THEIR BUDGET! It's excellent value for taxpayers' money.Flag

Name: Lewis S Dunbar on Feb 9, 2010Comments: Dear Sirs I am deeply saddened by this disciesion to cut this funding by such a large portion. This will have a severe knock on effect on the care and suppurt required to volonteering in the general maintanence of the Water of Leith. I thought the days of green awareness is upon us. There are groups that do regular clean ups on the Leith that should have been effected by Edinburgh Council. This has for many years been carried out by various groups on a voluntary basis. I feel very strongly about these cut backs. No doubt the officers/councilers will not be taking any kind of wage cut to reduce the Council overheads. Still well paid officers can sit in thier nice warm offices and thier juicy pensions, whilst those that fund these jobs are being requested to suffer massive cut backs. Cut backs should be reflected across the Council Board as a whole not those that can least afford such cuts. Regards Lewis Smith Dunbar C/O 33 1 F3 Westfield Road Gorgie Edinburgh EH11 2QWFlag

Name: E. Scott on Feb 9, 2010Comments: Reduction in funding would be a very short sighted response to Edinburgh's river which gives pleasure to so many of our citizens and visitors but requires constant work to maintain and improve this wonderful resource as well as clean up debris which gathers along its banks and creates an eyesore - if it were not for the support of the Water of Leith Trust and their helpers - who are all residents and voters in the City of Edinburgh - this living environment would become a shameful black mark on the decision making of the City of Edinburgh Council.Flag
