Concerned mothers within the Province of Saskatchewan are requesting laboring and delivering in water as a possible alternative to dry labor. Currently, mothers may have the opportunity to labor in water however, they are required to birth their baby outside of the pool. Most research indicates that a healthy woman with a complication free pregnancy can labor and deliver in water just as safely as on dry land.
There is substantial evidence which show the benefits of laboring and delivering in water. These include reduced stress on the mother and baby by promoting relaxation, improved circulation, less analgesia use, easier dilation without tearing or the need for an episiotomy, and possibly shorter first-stage labor, among many others. Women should be given the choice to make this informed decision.
This petition is a declaration of support from women (and men) who would like waterbirth introduced to the labor and delivery units throughout Saskatchewan hospitals.
