The petition of the undersigned, concerned citizens of Canada, states that:

Canada to adopt a policy with similar standard as set out by the European Commission for Food Safety, where all Genetically Modified (GM) food products containing individual ingredients with GM contents of 0.9 percent or higher must be labeled as containing GM or GMO.

If you are what you eat, wouldn't you want to know what you're eating and what modifications have been made to it? Currently in Canada, there are no policies that require the labeling of foods which have been genetically modified, even though 88% of Canadians polled want GM food labelling to be mandatory. The agri-food industry currently makes the decision to inform (usually GMO-Free products) or not to inform (GM food products) in order to increase profits and influence buying behaviours. Consumers should have the right to make informed purchasing decisions. If consumers are forced to know how many calories are in their Starbucks latte, then they should also know what foods have been genetically modified before they consume them.
