Despite numerous teaching awards, including a lifetime achievement award for dedication to the residency program, Dr. Joseph Wanski was dismissed from his voluntary role as an inpatient attending physician at the USC Family Medicine Residency at California Hospital. Dr. Wanski has served as an attending physician for 30 years as the Internal Medicine physician director beginning when the residency program first started and later becoming “Volunteer Faculty.” He has remained on call and in contact with the residents 24/7 for most of this time. He has rounded everyday with residents at the hospital and even most weekends, giving up his time to the residents and dedicating his life to teaching. He has been a central figure in shaping residents into compassionate, knowledgeable physicians. Dr. Wanski believes in fostering the residency program so much that he travelled to Catholic Healthcare West CHW headquarters in Northern California to prevent it from closing only a few years ago. Teaching residents and his dedication to the patients of downtown Los Angeles have been his life pursuit. He has been a committed mentor for residents, always encouraging residents to stay current with recent journals, to be professional and compassionate towards the patients with reminders such as “treat patients as if they were your own mother.” Resident training, education, and supervision were not taken into account when making this decision of dismissal. The residency program has been attempting to recruit new faculty for the past two years and is currently still understaffed. Currently, there are no attendings on staff with Dr. Wanski’s knowledge base or expertise pertaining to hospital internal medicine. We believe that this dismissal was personal and political in nature. Additionally, we believe that the potential financial gain, by increased hospital admissions, for the residency program took priority over resident education, training, and supervision. They have not taken into account how this decision can affect others especially the residents and Dr. Wanski himself. He was only provided with less than a month and a half notice that this dramatic change will occur without an explanation. Even at this time, if residents were to be asked why Dr. Wanski was dismissed, no one would be able to answer. This decision and the way it was handled by the residency administration were unprofessional. As a student of Dr. Wanski and in support of and respect for a life dedicated to training resident physicians, please sign this petition. It is our hope that with this petition the American Committee on Graduate Medical Education, California Hospital Medical Center Graduate Medical Education Committee, Keck School of Medicine at USC Department of Family Medicine, and the USC Family Medicine Residency will understand that the current and former residents of Dr. Wanski think of him as an integral part of their education and lives. We are calling, unequivocally, on the CHMC GME committee and the USC Family Medicine Residency to formally apologize and reinstate Dr. Wanski immediately.
