To The Electors of the Mascot Hall of Fame:
This is Wally The Green Monster's first year of eligibility to the Mascot Hall of Fame, and like Yaz and Ted Williams,(who played LF in front of the "Green Monster") Wally deserves the bronze plaque in his first year of eligibility.
Since arriving at Fenway on Opening Day 1997, Wally helped transform the culture Red Sox Nation, from a losing/mediocre one which was only happy with 2nd place finishes and losing to the Evil Empire in the Playoffs....To a winning environment which attracted winners. Evidence since 1997 The Red Sox have had only one losing season.
Fenway Park was dreary, and had its paint peeling...the food was rated one of the three worst in baseball by Sports Illustrated Year after Year. The seats were close but it did not offer what modern ballparks did. The last All Star Game BW (before Wally) was played in 1961. the last World Championship was in 1918.
No one ever would expect the All Star Game back in Boston, park is too small....not modern enough, blah blah, blah.
After Wally came on board the All Star Game was back in Boston in 1999. two years later.
In 1999, 2003, and 2004 The Red Sox played the Evil Empire in the ALCS...finally having the historic comeback win in 2004.
Down 3-0 in games and down three runs in the 9th inning...Fenway had a funeral like atmosphere...depressed people crying in their beers expecting their seasons to end....It was quiet....WALLY WOULD HAVE NONE OF THAT!!!
He went around the stands got the crowd pumped up, he would not quit til they cheered the Sox on...We are not waiting til next year lets show the Yanks.
The Sox tied the game...and then they beat the Yanks!!!
WALLY MUST HAVE DONE THE BEST JOB EVER BY A MASCOT TO THE CROWD BACK IN TO AN ENTHUSIASTIC STATE DURING A LOSING ELIMINATION GAME....IN ANY SPORT FOR THAT HE DESERVES FIRST BALLOT ENSHRINEMENT!!!
Now they were down 3-1 in the ALCS... They won Game 5 in Fenway on an Ortiz Single in 14th inning.
Back to NY the Yanks got spanked in games 6 and 7 for the greatest comeback ever.
After that Wally cheered on the Sox vs the Cards in the World Series. Who could forget Wally waving the flag in St. Louis after the world Series win. and in the Parade.
Wally does a lot in the community for the Red Sox Foundation and the Jimmy Fund. He is out on Yawkey Way rallying the fans before the games.
He is always accessible to kids and grown ups at Sox Games and through out the community.
Electors, please induct one of the greatest and funniest mascots of all time into the Mascot Hall of Fame.
