We, the undersigned, urge LAUSD to take direct action to resurface the courtyard at Walgrove Avenue Elementary School, and complete the community-financed “Garden of Knowledge” courtyard renovation before our grant monies begin to expire and the school year resumes in September, 2006.
What’s “The Garden of Knowledge”?
The Garden of Knowledge is a renovation plan for the center quad of the Walgrove campus which is in desperate need of revitalization. The low-maintenance design, created (pro-bono) by landscape architect, Jay Griffith, includes trees, seating and shade to create a versatile, multi-use, low-maintenance space that will be enjoyed by generations of students.
Why resurface?
The asphalt in the courtyard area has not been repaved since the school was built in the late 1950’s. It presents an unsightly and dangerous tripping hazard, and must be replaced before we can proceed with the renovation.
Why concrete?
Heat is a considerable challenge in this area of the campus, and concrete provides a much cooler (and less toxic) surface for our young students. Furthermore, the courtyard design calls for stenciling the walkways with learning images (such as the world map, chart of the solar system, hand alphabet for the deaf, the periodic chart, etc.) which will be significantly most visible and durable on a concrete surface.
What’s the rush?
Through vast community support, we have cobbled together grant money, donations and Measure K funds to construct the garden, but we lack the money necessary to complete the resurfacing. Approved plans were turned in to LAUSD Maintenance & Operations Department in February, but no construction date has been set. We need LAUSD to resurface the courtyard and complete the garden this summer, before our grant monies begin to expire and students return to the campus in the Fall of 2006.
