Name: Glen Wood on Nov 19, 2012Comments: I learned recently with consternation that Wakefield Music staff have been told that they may lose their qualified teacher status due to budget cuts. While I fully understand that times are hard at the moment, I feel that this proposal is utterly insulting to music staff and extremely short-sighted. I have never been a great musician myself, but as someone who grew up on a council estate in Huddersfield, getting involved in music at school may well have saved me from getting into trouble. This was entirely due to a charismatic and enthusiastic music teacher and my love of all kinds of music has stayed with me ever since. My partner’s eight year old daughter is discovering that same joy, playing the violin at school and attending Manygates Music Centre on Saturday mornings along with many many other children. I always find it sad that scores of young people playing music hardly ever makes the papers, but one teenager mugs an old lady and it is front page news. My partner’s girl used to lack confidence but since playing in a group with other boys and girls under an extremely gifted and inspirational teacher, she has made excellent all round progress. I feel that the fact that these brilliant, talented music teachers may be treated as inferior to other teachers is an absolute disgrace.Flag

The teachers provide an invaluable musical education and should not be treated any differently to any other subject taught to children. They are professionally quaified, very committed and do an outstanding job.Flag
