Name: LeAnn Freeman on Dec 7, 2012Comments: I attended the sentencing hearing in September and felt Katie Conapinski was still trying to shrug off responsibility for her actions. To hear that she now is complaining that monitoring is too expensive just shows me that she continues to learn nothing. Ms. Conapinski wants this 'inconvenience' to be over and thinks she can get a new, lighter sentence if she complains about cost. Personally, I feel jail time may be a necessary step to shake Ms. Conapinski into understanding that her actions do NOT go without consequence. However, my fear is that the court will allow Ms. Conapinski to serve a few weekends or weeks in a prison setting and then move forward to probation. This would be a travesty. The DeBruins and community were robbed of their money and, more importantly, of their belief that people can be trusted. Miss Conapinski may have returned the money she stole, but she has not shown any real remorse and needs to serve a sentence which may not be 'convenient' for her. She needs to be reminded of her actions and the incredible pain she inflicted upon a grieving family and community. She should be feeling shame instead of complaining that she is inconvenienced by the sentence she was given.Flag

Name: Erin Braun on Dec 7, 2012Comments: Justice requires that someone who preyed on the illness of a dying child, and the fear of his family, and the generosity of a community - to make *money* - to serve time as prescribed. If Katie cannot afford the monitoring, she simply needs to find other sources of income, or adjust her lifestyle. 1 year of house arrest for what she did is pretty generous. Wade's family should not have to encounter her during that time.Flag

Name: Tammy Murray MS.Ed. on Dec 7, 2012Comments: Wade was the nephew of a good friend. I am disgusted that this individual took advantage of a traumatized family for her own personal gain. She was so self-absorbed and depraved that she scammed this family and made an already unbearable situation more devastating .The trauma of having to continually go back to court to address this individual is unconscionable.. To hear that she can "not afford" to pay monitoring fees, is ridiculous and only forces to re traumatize this family . They can not move forward when this woman continues to impact their lives in such a negative and destructive way. They now must move forward. Unlike this greedy, depraved individual; the family seeks to make a positive impact on others who are afflicted by cancer. I hope that you send a clear message to this individual and that she experiences the consequences of her actions. It is inherently wrong . Despite everything the family had endured, they continue to give back and assist others in their time of need. I urge you to do the right thing and communicate to the family and to this individual that people who are so heartless will ultimately pay for their actions. Please support the family. If the woman is unable to pay, perhaps she should sit in jail and think about her actions.Flag
