We, the parents of students at Ogden International School, hereby vote AGAINST the recent proposal to merge Ogden International with Jenner Elementary for the following reasons:

  • The move to a former Cabrini Green Jenner campus is the WRONG environment for our kids. Our children’s safety is of utmost importance for all at the Ogden community. While the neighborhood is changing, there are still real safety concerns.
  • The merger would drastically impair the strong academic record of students at Ogden. Such a merger could result in Ogden teachers considering alternative teaching venues in the City. It may also force existing students to leave the Ogden campus. This could result in a further decline in the school’s reputation and quality of education.
  • Ogden already has an excellent academic reputation. The Ogden community is inclusive of an incredibly diverse student body from every nationality, religion, culture and economic background. It is the only K-12 full continuum IB school in Illinois. If we change all of this, we risk a decline in student performance and standards and losing our IB status.

The response to this petition has demonstrated a clear consensus among our families regarding the future of our school. This momentum confirms that our concerns about the proposed merger remain a primary priority for the community.

We chose Ogden primarily because of its PYP. Inclusiveness is an important component of the IB education. Some of the attitudes and conduct behind this petition movement have been deplorable, and despite self-adulation, have shown that there are elements in our school community as challenged for character and values as some of you perceive the parents at Jenner.

As Ogden parents we have been given virtually no chance to protect what we have planned for our kids future here. Our work and home is near school. This should be Ogden's decision; why are we putting our plans aside to help a school that is not in our neighborhood? All in the name of overcrowding? What is the real incentive for those pushing it?

If Principal Beyer wants a under enrollement @ Ogden, he'll move forward with this proposed merger. Parents will pull their kids out of Ogden, then he'll have a real budget crisis.

Consider that when Ogden was opened in 2011 the 109,000 square feet was set to handle 900 students at a cost of $60,074/seat. There are presently 708 students enrolled at Ogden or less than 80% of capacity according to the CPS own estimates. Why the fuss over overcrowding at a school that was constructed to accommodate 200 more students?

This merger might make sense from the financing perspective but is totally unacceptable from the perspective of quality of education and safety of our kids.

I am all about the social development and upliftment of under privilleged kids and families, but it cannot come at the cost of compromising educational and behavioral and safety environments for all the other kids.
