If you would like to donate to VSM, please return to the VSM website.** We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this petition for the complete change and reform of the Presidential and Congressional political process. Special interest groups and wealthy elite buy the attention of our elected officials through creative and excessive campaign financing to obtain favorable results at the expense of the people. Furthermore, far too much money and time is spent to on the elections. Every election seems to set a new record. This money and time takes more of influence away from the people and puts it in the hands of the wealthy. A dramatic limit to the amount of money and time spent on an election will greatly minimize the influence the wealthy elite and special interest groups can have on the election results. Moreover, strict lobby monitoring is needed, as well as line item veto or pork barrel elimination. Imposing term limits and repair of the gerrymandering to the traditional political boundaries should also be mandated. The appearance that the political process controls the national budget is too great. It seems that budget proposals are established to reward the supporters of an elected candidate or political party rather than to provide for the benefit of the whole nation. Opposing political ideologies competing for the limited resources are dividing the nation rather than unifying. These opposing ideological political promises are draining the national treasure, and creating a financial weakness that may be exploited by entities not favorable to a strong United States. This irresponsible pattern must end if we are to preserve the freedoms for our children. Therefore, we propose the following changes to the political process: -A drastic and significant reduction in the amount of money that can be donated and spent on an election campaign with equal limits for all candidates, this limit includes the transfer of money to a politician, political party or election campaign to be used for advertising in support or opposition of a candidate or party. -An establishment of an independent monitoring body to regulate the political process and third party advertisement to ensure fairness, truthfulness and punish abuses. -A limit of four months duration for an election campaign and two months for the primaries. -A redrawing of traditional grid boundaries for voting districts and the elimination and prohibition of gerrymandering. -An establishment of a two term limit for the Senate and a five term limit for the House of Representatives. -An elimination of the practice of pork barreling or the establishment of line item veto for the President. -A transparent lobbying process that prohibits the transfer of money to a politician, political party or election campaign to include advertising in support or opposition of a candidate or party. Establishing the above changes will eliminate an abusive political process that has no conscious or limit to how much of the national treasure it will consume, nor concern for our future generation's freedoms.
