Death rates for men under the age of 65 are dramatically and consistently higher than for women across most health conditions.
Differences in life expectancies between men and women range from 4.4 in Sweden to a staggering 11.8 years in Latvia.
Many more men die from suicide than women, yet depression is still one of the conditions perceived as a predominantly female issue. In most European countries, suicide alone causes more deaths in young men than road traffic accidents.
European men also experience the vast majority of accidents in the workplace. In the EU 15, they account for more than 94% of related fatalities.
There is plenty of scope for improvement of men’s health. It should be possible to aim for a future in which men are healthier for longer.
In the lead up to International Men\'s Health Week 2007 (11-17 June), EMHF is calling on your support to:
- help increase awareness of men\'s health needs
- back the development of actionable plans in consultation with main stakeholders at European, national and local levels.
EUROPEAN MEN\'S HEALTH FORUM (EMHF) is an independent, non-governmental, non-profit-making organisation established to improve male health across Europe.
EMHF aims to improve the health of all men, boys, and the wellbeing of their communities.
The health of men and women are inextricably linked and should be improved according to their respective needs and priorities.
