Eastern Kansas Health Care System is proposing to close the Leavenworth Kansas campus in-patient Psychiatric program and move it to Topeka Kansas campus. This will cost jobs for the health care providers due to the following:
. Distance to travel for most is greater tha 80
miles a day.
. Health care is a specialized area today and the
health care providers will be forced to either
quit the VA health care system or work outside
of their chosen specialized field.
. And most importantly the veterans in North east
Kansas, North Western Missouri, Nebraska and
Iowa will be significantly impacted financially
by the additional distance (80+ miles) to
travel for health care. This will also limit
families to be part of the veterans care and
foundational support on a daily basis.
Please respond to this petition asap, we will need to act with this petition by November,30, 2002. The veterans supported us in our times of need and now it\'s their time of need. Let\'s show our support for them and vote NO.
The feedback I have received regarding the proposed closure confirms that many families are deeply concerned about the travel burden this shift would create. I am currently compiling these accounts to ensure that the administration understands the real impact on our local veterans. Please continue to share your experiences so I can present a comprehensive case to the decision makers.
November 1, 2002
The momentum behind this petition highlights the widespread concern regarding the proposed closure of the Leavenworth facility. This collective response demonstrates a firm commitment to protecting the standard of care for our veterans. I am currently preparing to present these results to the relevant officials to ensure our position is clearly understood.

These men and women served our country and they deserve way better than this. Keep the psych ward open where it is!

They promised to take care of our vets and now they pull stuff like this. So frustrated right now.

My dad goes to the Leavenworth facility. He can barely drive to the grocery store let alone 80 miles for help. This is just wrong.

Ridiculous idea. Our vets in this area are gonna lose everything if you move this. STOP CLOSING VA SERVICES.

Totally unfair to the staff and the patients. 80 miles is way too far for an emergency.
