This is a message for the American media, in all its forms.

Adam Lanza, a man whose name we regret to know, killed people to get our attention. We understand and support the media's directive to report the news despite this. But murderers like Lanza are using you, and you have a responsibility beyond publishing the facts to deny it of them. This petition suggests that major news outlets organize themselves to agree upon a new set of guidelines for reporting these acts of domestic terrorism. The names and pictures of Adam Lanza, James Holmes, Jared Loughner, and others like them could have been available yet hidden. As readers, we ask to be given the option to click a link and type in a code to find the names of these terrible people. This one simple step, or some other like it, could have helped to prevent the fulfillment of Adam Lanza's desire for wide recognition for his crimes. More importantly, this may extinguish the same desire in future criminals. We want to read about the victims without contributing to their killer's celebrity.
