Virginia Commonwealth University Housing

This is addressing the issue of not having enough housing for the 2007 - 2008 academic year. Many students are left with no housing due to the inadequate space and availability of housing. Not having a place to live puts those who do not live in the area at a great disadvantage. Many of students will have to either transfer, or come up with extra money to find an apartment. Virginia Commonwealth University should be able to provide a safe, drug-free, and productive environment for all those present. Not having housing on campus is very expensive, and most apartments do not accept financial aid. We feel the lottery system for housing was not sufficient because the numbers were given at random versus the order the information was received. If housing is quaranteed for freshmen, we feel housing should be offered to everyone.

My girlfriend and many of her friends are affected, and I think that a school of this caliber and this size has NO excuse for having no housing and no explanation or corrective action. My girlfriend and many of her friends are affected by this issue, and the worst part is that seniority played no part the housing selection like other schools. They had some type of "lottery" drawing for houses and indeed, it was just that. Slim chances. My girlfriend got a low number which was supposed to allow her to pick houses among some of the first to select, and even that was faulty. Her time frame to pick begun at 9:00AM, the system did not let her pick until 9:10AM, and even so, housing was full. My heart is out to everyone affected, I'm sure the people signing this petition are less than 3% of all affected, but I hope this petition brings forth action. My best to all of you.
