Families of incoming kindergartners in the Verona Area School District are currently allowed to choose only one charter school option from the three that operate in the district. The odds of them actually receiving the placement vary from year to year, so it is always a gamble. Many families are interested in more than one charter school or in charter schools in general but are currently forced to make a choice based largely on their odds of getting a placement. For families who find more than one of the charters appealing, there should be the option to submit a prioritized placement request form that shows which charter schools they're interested in. The current system of choose-one-then-you're-done obligates families to choose a school not based only on what they think is beneficial for their child but also on statistical likelihood of being accepted. Let's not let "playing the odds" pre-empt more important matters, like finding the best educational fit possible for each child.
