Please Help Save the Actuarial Science Club Office!

A few weeks ago, the Dean’s Office decided to reclaim one of the club offices on the third floor of the MC building in exchange for the old MathNEWS closet in MC 3041. At the Math Council meeting on July 5, 2006, the Math Society has reached the decision of relocating the Actuarial Science Club office from its current location in MC 3030 to MC 3034. The relocation to MC 3034 will cause a 30% decrease in our office space, and will also place the office in a hallway that is less visible and less convenient to many students. We strongly oppose this decision and we firmly believe that this relocation will have numerous adverse impacts on the students.

The Actuarial Science Club is one of the largest undergraduate clubs in the Faculty of Mathematics. In this Spring term alone, we have over 100 members and during Fall terms our member count grows close to 200. Each term, the Actuarial Science Club has proven to be instrumental in serving its students. We organize academic forums, social events and employer information seminars to educate students on various aspects of the actuarial profession, and to increase the interaction between students in the program. For example, last Wednesday we attracted the President of the Society of Actuaries to our university and over 200 students and professors attended this event.

One main use of the club office is our library. Waterloo students are well known in the industry for our ability to pass actuarial exams but a large number of students rely on the club to borrow the necessary study manuals to prepare for these exams. Our library is of very high demand and a huge number of students come by everyday to borrow and return study material. In addition, a lot of students drop by the club office daily to inquire about issues relating to coop, actuarial exams, courses and events. In order to make these services as accessible as possible to the student body, it is extremely important that the club office have a convenient location.

The Actuarial Science Club has close ties with many employers and occasionally they visit our office. A recent example includes two actuaries from Manulife Financial who came to discuss with us the logistics of an upcoming job information session. Being the most distinguished and renowned actuarial science program in Canada, we need to uphold the most basic professional image. A decently sized, visible office not only gives the employers a positive impression on the club, but more importantly it shows that the Actuarial Science program is being valued by the Faculty and the University.

The Actuarial Science Club had attempted to solve this issue through discussions with the Associate Dean’s Office and the President of Math Society, Leander Quiring. However, we felt that our main concerns had not been heard and properly addressed. We also tried to propose a reasonable alternative solution to Leander – we proposed that the storage room (MC 3028) next to the current Actuarial Science Club office be moved instead. Since location of the storage room is immaterial, and moving contents in the storage room requires similar effort as moving our club office, we believe this is an optimal solution that is mutually beneficial to all parties. However, the President of Math Society rejected this proposal, and suggested reasons that we simply believe were invalid.

The ultimate goal of the club is to serve the students in the Faculty of Mathematics. The Actuarial Science Club has worked extremely hard to organize events, manage the library, coordinate employer information sessions and hold regular office hours to serve the students in the Faculty. We strongly believe that the Actuarial Science Club deserves to keep a reasonably sized, visible office so that the club can continue to carry out the necessary functions in order to benefit hundreds of actuarial students each term. We hope that you would help us save the existing club office by signing this petition with your name and student number. It is important that we voice our concerns to the Math Society and the Dean of Mathematics.

Sincerely,

UW ActSci Club Executives
