The UW Farm and UW’s Housing and Food Services (HFS) are currently negotiating
a relationship in which HFS will buy Farm produce to sell to students through HFS
venues such as the District Market. The UW Farm has proposed that HFS pay slightly
higher or the same prices as what they pay for small quantities of organic produce
from their wholesale distributor, Charlie’s Produce. HFS want the Farm to charge
15% less for our produce than what HFS is paying for Charlie’s.

We at the Farm believe that HFS should pay real prices for the real food that we
produce. This product adds major publicity value, educational opportunities, and
social capital to HFS’s enterprise and the greater UW community of which we are all
a part. Furthermore, the Farm is currently operating solely via the power of
volunteer students and leftover grant money. We cannot expand to put our produce
into the UW food system through HFS without sufficient funds to pay for
organizational and material upgrades.
