ATTENTION TO THOSE WHO CARE ABOUT EDUCATION: This past Saturday I received the news that the Federal government had decided to not continue funding Wesleyan Upward Bound. For those of you who do not know Upward Bound, it is a federally funded program that helps low-income high school students become the first in their families to attend college. Upward Bound programs across the country received th......e same news as us, around 25% of Trio programs to be exact. What this means is that as of June 1, 2012 these programs will no longer have funds to continue running and will therefore cease to exist. It is ridiculous to me that funds are being taken away from the neediest population so that those in power can inappropriately allocate these funds elsewhere. These types of injustices must end. How are the poor, underrepresented, and unprivileged supposed to break the cycle if crucial resource like these are constantly being eradicated? This behavior simply leads to a perpetuation of the systemic and institutional oppression found in our education system. I am reaching out to all of you so that you can spread the word of this crime. After all, this is nothing more than robbing the resources of those that have very few to begin with. Please reach out to any connections you have to get this out there. Write to Senators/Congress, reach out to news outlets, post on blogs. Telling your friends and telling them to spread the word works just as well. These programs work.
