Privately owned businesses are entitled to make decisions regarding their property. By placing restrictions on them, you are only advocating the idea of communism.
This city council exemplifies everything wrong with government. It has fallen in love with itself and its own "high-mindedness" and has decided that big brother knows what's best for the people. Never before have I paid attention to my local government but I will do everything in my power to make sure that every council member/nanny that voted for the ban not return to their current positions.
I am a non-smoker, however laws which restrict the rights of people to freely assemble slap the facr of the US constitution. If the City Council were simply concerned for employees, they would act as OSHA would and require Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as a mandatory requirement for employers to provide (regulated gas masks)
As a born and raised citizen of this community, this is by far the worst idea cooked up by city council. Way to go fools!!!!!

I work in a night club, and am also a smoker. I am no longer to smoke at work, but yet other people can smoke at their work if they work in an office building. I am not allowed to take smoke breaks, due to the fact that I am a dj.
This is by far the worst idea ever
You idiots have no right barging in on our lives. What's next? Take away alcohol? Then candy? Then shut down fast food? Maybe shut down playgrounds while your at it?
As stated above, freedom of choice is the issue at hand. The decision of the inividual business owners as to whether their establishment be smoke-free or not is just that, THEIR CHOICE.
Thank god this ordinance has passed. I can finally go out for the evening and not smell like a dirty ash tray.
The last comment further proves why your ban is so awful. It catters to people who dont want to smell bad. Very political! Way to go!
If someone doesnt want to "smell bad" dont go to that bar. When you go to a bar, it is like stepping in the owners house and telling them they cant smoke but they can invite you over and pay the mortgage while you make the rules. IGNORANCE
Our government listens to it's citizens - if enough of us rise up against this small step towards the elimination of our freedoms, I am confident our government will listen.

Could we not smoke in a bar or club after 9 pm when the "non-smokers" leave??? Seriously!!! I can go to support my home town of Jefferson City and light up in a bar there. It's all about supporting the local economy. Let us live our own lives... it's a first amendment right!
I regret hurting revenue but I honesty dont think I can support this ban by continuing to do business here when I can avoid it. It is insane and I dont even smoke

Ban smoking at all establishments, all the time, or get rid of this law before you kill businesses! It is not working!
I though this was the USA... with freedom, civil rights, etc. Guess I was wrong. Where does the bread line start?

I believe that we all have a right to make our own decisions and by taking away a personal right such as smoking in a restaurant and/or bar you have made the decision for us, this is not the American way!
As a non smoker, I still highly disapprove of the smoking ban.
Smoking or non-smoking. Make up your minds. The existing law favors facitlies with patios and doesn't send a clear message from the Council. Get rid of the patio portion and even the score.

Let's put it like this, I've smoked for 6+ years now and honestly, I don't have a problem with stepping outside to have a cigarette if need be, but what I do have problem with is a city council telling people what to do. To say your protecting employees is a ridiculous. If an employee doesn't wan to be around smoke, then they wouldn't work at an establishment that allows it. They have that decision....just like I have the decision to smoke or not. Buy for 4 people to sit here and tell me what's best for everybody is overstepping some boundaries.
Ditto on everything stated above.

You will regret what you have done to this city

The patio situation is unacceptable.

As a non-smoker who never felt "threatened" in an local restaurants, I am saddened that the City Council chose to impose this no-smoking policy on restaurant owners catering to their customers, especially when a majority of restaurants in town were already voluntarily smoke-free.
This is ridiculous. Next thing you know, we can't even smoke in our own cars. If you are that worried about something that "kills," how about you focus on all the minors drinking and driving as well as those that are legal. Seems like those people kill faster and more mercilessly than smoking....
I believe it should be the decision of the business owner to determine whether or not to allow smoking and the decision of patrons and employees on whether to visit places that allow smoking. This ban should have AT LEAST gone on a ballot for the residents to vote on. City council had no right to make this decision and I will NOT be voting for any of the current members next election.
I live in Moberly, but I work in Columbia. It is also my understanding that this law was voted "no" by the population of the city. If the citizens do not want the law in place then it should not be passed.

I was ill the day of the vote but I did call Barbara Hoppe and let her know what my opinion is on this issue. I intend to work toward the repeal of this ordence.
I was at a local pub last night that has setup a smoking area outside under a tarp. There were more people outside in the snow and cold smoking than there was inside the "smoke free" bar. City Council should get up out of their cozy chairs in their cozy warm offices and go to some of the local pubs and see how many people are royaly pissed. I know smoking is not the best thing I can be doing, however I am grown I dont need the city council of Columbia playing Mommy and Daddy for me. Whatever happened to "The land of the free"?
While I am at it, for you non smokers that hate the way you smell...Lets pass a law banning excessive perfumes.....I have allergies to these chemicals and have to leave restaurants when the person at the next table has decided to BATHE in perfumes YUK!!!
As always, the free market could have decided this issue. Any restaurant or bar that wanted to be smoke free already was. There are an enormous number of smoke free establishments in town for anyone who wants to work in a smoke free environment. How about you fix the roads and let us worry about our lungs.
If 4 city council members currently have the authority to do what was done then laws need to be changed immediately. Further, the economic impact to the city from lost tax revenue is going to be a real surprise for them.

I understand the reasoning behind the smoking ban, and I understand that your intentions were good. However, regardless of my opinions on smoking cigarettes, I don't believe that it should be up to a city council to decide for business owners whether or not they will allow smoking. I think you're standing on a slippery slope with this. I don't agree with the personal attacks aimed at you on this petition, but I also don't agree with your decision. Thank you for your consideration.
