Apathetic carnivores where are you? At the AMM yesterday, a motion was passed to try and prevent campus catering establishments from selling meat products on Mondays, aka "Meat-free Mondays". As meat-eaters, this is a huge and very alarming restriction of our liberty - not having any produce that we feel willing to eat on one of our 5 weekdays in University. Just imagine the reaction, were the Union to lobby for Fruit and Veg free Fridays? The vegetarians would be livid, and scream discrimination at the suggestion they can only participate in lunch on Union premises if they choose to bring their own packed lunch! So why should we have to suffer the same fate? This can actually be construed as persecution of the minority, in contravention of the Union safe space policy (http://www.ubu.org.uk/pageassets/activities/roomandequipmentbookings/Safe-Space-Policy-motion.pdf)! The core aims of the safe space policy are to ensure an accessible environment in which every student feels comfortable, safe and able to get involved in all aspects of the organisation free from intimidation or judgement - so which part of the anti-meat motion complies with that? This is plain and simple persecution of the carnivore majority simply to placate the very small minority of activist vegetable eating campaigners. The logic is fallacious. It is a disproportionate measure and restriction of the free choice of the majority of students, pushed through by those who are affected by it the least - how convenient, eh? People will still eat meat, all that this policy will do is drive them away from the already sparsely populated union and faculty buildings, to spend their money in retail stores and rob the university of profit on food - what a fantastic outreach to re-energise and re-involve the student body! We fully support vegetarians, they are entitled to eat or not eat what they like - so why cant they extend us the courtesy back of letting us do the same?
