IMPORTANT NOTE: A colleague told me that after signing the petition a window came up asking for a donation to iPetitions. ipetitions is a private company with no connection to me personally or to the UN, and of course you are under absolutely no obligation to give a donation. Thank you.

UPDATE: I had met with the UN Staff Union President and Vice Presidents in January 2008 and presented this proposal to them. They told me it was very impressive and that they would like to bring it to the attention of the next General Assembly as part of a Human Resources Package.

PETITION TEXT

We the undersigned, (who are current UN staff members), feel that current and future United Nations staff members who choose to, should have the option to postpone their retirement, and officially continue in active service with the United Nations until the age of 66 (the current retirement age in the U.S.), or any age between 60 and 66, without having to undergo a break in service. We also request that this continued service include all regular pension and other benefits. Of course, those who wish to retire at the current UN retirement age of 60 or 62 (depending on when they were hired), may still do so.

We request that this proposal be brought to the attention of the General Assembly - the Fifth Committee, preferably at this session.

If you are in agreement with this petition (as stated above), please enter your Name and UN Department, Office, or Mission.

[For those who would like more information, please email me at ward5@un.org for an Addendum, which lists relevant points that explain the reasons and justification for this proposal, and shows how it can benefit both the Organization and staff. It is not possible to attach it to this site.]

Thank you very much for your support. :-)

I believe very much in the ideals of the United Nations and want to continue in service here. 62 is still a young age and staff have many more years of productive service they could be giving to the UN. And indeed, isn't 60 the new 40! I also must continue working beyond 62 for financial reasons because as a U.S. citizen I will not receive social security until 66. Also, though I have many years of prior service, I do not have sufficient service this time, and therefore will not receive a monthly UN pension when I retire. Please email me at ward5@un.org for a copy of the Addendum I researched and wrote, which lists the reasons and justification for this proposal.
