Contre sa volonté, dans quelques jours, tous ses biens seront vendus et dispersés. Marcel Marceau souhaitait que ses archives, ses costumes, sa bibliothèque et tous ses effets personnels de scène soient rassemblés en France en un lieu unique entièrement dédié à l'art du Mime, dans le but d'offrir et de partager son art, son univers avec le plus grand nombre. Marcel Marceau était l'un des plus grands ambassadeurs français de notre temps, reconnu comme le plus grand mime contemporain. Qui n'a pas rêvé aux aventures de Bip, le personnage poétique et burlesque créé en 1947 et dont les aventures ont ému et fait rire le monde entier Bip n'aurait pas existé sans le Pierrot romantique du XIXème siècle, Gaspard de Bureau, sans la commedia dell'arte et plus près de nous sans Charlot, Buster Keaton, ou Laurel Hardy. Ces héros étaient ses idoles de son enfance, comme ils sont aujourd'hui des valeurs de références pour les nouvelles générations. Aujourd'hui, Ce patrimoine artistique et culturel laissé par Marcel Marceau est en grand danger. Nous nous devons d'agir pour la préservation de ce patrimoine unique avant le 26 et 27 mai 2009. Le 26 et 27 mai prochain aura lieu la vente aux enchères de ses biens à l'hôtel Drouot, vente dite "hommage". Comment peut-on oser ce terme quand il s'agit de trahir la volonté d'un homme et de dilapider le patrimoine artistique d'un art, plus de soixante ans de traces, de témoignages et de créations! Bip nous pardonnerait-il notre silence Le délai est court, mais notre volonté infinie. L'oeuvre du Mime Marcel Marceau appartient au patrimoine du Théâtre français. Encore faudrait-il qu'elle soit préservée et accessible à tous ! C'est pourquoi, nous, connus ou inconnus, de toute profession confondue, admirateurs du mime Marceau Marceau du monde entier, nous souhaitons que son oeuvre et ses biens, liés à son art, ne soient pas dispersés, mais transmis à un lieu culturel dédié à l'art du Mime pour les générations futures. Marcel Marceau was one of the greatest French cultural ambassadors of our times, recognized as the greatest contemporary mime. We have all dreamed about adventures of Bip, the legendary poetic and burlesque character created by Marcel Marceau in 1947, who touched and brought tears to the eyes of people all over the world. Bip would never have come into being had it not been for the romantic Pierrot of the 19th century, Gaspard de Bureau, Commedia dell’arte or, closer to our own times, Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton and Laurel and Hardy. These had been his idols from childhood, as they continue to stand as icons for new generations. Today Marcel Marceau’s artistic and cultural patrimony is at risk. We must act to preserve it before May 26 2009. On May 26 and 27 his personal belongings will be sold at auction at the French auction house ‘Hotel Drouot’, in a sale billed as a ‘tribute’ to the artist. The use of such a term is outrageous, as it flouts both the stated intentions of the artist and his artistic patrimony, consisting of over 60 years’ worth of memorabilia, testimony and creation that will be scattered to the winds. Would Bip forgive us for standing by and allowing this to happen We have little time to act, but we are determined. It was Marcel Marceau’s wish that his belongings be preserved in a cultural center dedicated to the art of mime in France, so that his art, life and whole universe could be shared and enjoyed by the greatest number of people possible. His work belongs to the heritage of French theater. But it must be preserved and made accessible to all!
