Comments: This is crazy. My son in law got in trouble when he was 22 years old, stole some car rims, did time for shock probation. Has a wife, two children and one on the way and has been informed by his boss that because of this law, he will no longer have a job. So it is putting my grandchildren and daughter on welfare and him in the un employment line. This is stupid..Tell me what to do

Comments: If someone who truely repents of his sins no matter how large, he should be able to support bimself. Otherwise to live he will resort to a life of crime again... This is what we should try to prevent. Not this bill which would only lead to more crime in order to survive in a world that already has too much crime.

Comments: I know someone that has been affected by this. He made some mistakes in the past. But has not been in any trouble in eight years. Now he has a wife, three kids and one on the way. Now he has no way to support them. The only ones getting hurt by this is the families that really want to make productive lives and do the right things.

Comments: If a person has a clear record and has no other reason to be terminated they should not be fired for somehting they did years earlier. People do change and start to raise families that need to be taken care of. Please look into this and reconsider House Bill 705

Comments: My brother has had a job with an Air Conditioning company for a year. He has a felony from his later teenage years they are firing him because of the law. He has a family and now he is unemployed. The unemployment rate has now risen. He will have to go on welfare to survive. This is an outrage he has not been in a drop of trouble for 12 years.

Comments: Yes, being a convicted felon is horrid. I found this petition by looking for what rights I do have when looking for a job. Even when you have served your time and changed your lifestyle, you still don't have the right to work.

Comments: From what I have read I agree, how are criminals who probably did get into trouble as youths become responsible citizens when they enter society I have a loved one who messed up when he was young. He was a senior in high school when his only living brother died in a horrible car accident. He was five when his favorite brother was killed. This boy suffered a lot of tragedy in his life. He was angry young man and when a gang member threatened his life he let his anger get the best of him. Hence he gets into trouble, put on probation and does something stupid like let a friend put a gun in his truck...BAM he gets locked up. While he's locked up his oldest daughter is murdered and he's denied the right to view or attend his daughter's funeral. He's not a mass murder but he gets treated like it. I'm a cop but justice...SUCKS!

Comments: What has happened to paying ones debt to society How can a good person who made a mistake ever become a good citizen if he cannot even find employment. Doesn't anyone care anymore Is there no understanding of someone's making a mistake and trying to make up for it Why can't we be big enough to give the people who make mistakes a chance to recoup Are we, ourselves, so perfect Do we dare "throw the first stone"

Comments: I am in another state getting ready to relocate to Austin, Texas. My Fiance in an ex-con. While He was in Prison he took some college classes and received his universal technician license for heating & a/c & electrical. I don't understand why they would offer classes like that in prison if when they did their time and got out they could not get a job in that field or any service field. I guess to a degree I can understand If someone was in prison for murder or child molester. but leave it up to the employers to run the background check and decide wether or not to hire them. No wonder they end up back in prison because we take away every bit of life left in these people and they have no other choice. I hate to say it but I'm going to HATE living in Texas.

Comments: i really hope something is actually being done with this petiton and that its not just collecting names. 20 years is a rediculous amount of time to hold somebody liable for a crime that they may have only spent 2 years in jail for. obviously the reason for placement in jail is punishment so why are these people still being prosecuted for something that they've already paid they're dues for i know a felon and he commited a crime in 1994. it is now 2006 and he has not broken the law since 1994 yet it is impossible for him to get a job and because of that his kids are going without so if this law was passed to hurt families or children its doing just that, i'd say its very effective in doing more distruction than any good it might have thought to do. people change some for the better and some for the worse. im sure the people or persons who passed this law are not the same people or persons they were even 5 years ago and i think that speaks volumes. i signed this petition because im outraged that anyone who didnt commit a crime that had a life sentence stil has to pay for the rest of their life. i am not a felon so i dont get anything out of this if the petition is effective i only get the satisfaction of knowing that people know wrong when they see it.

Comments: Felons who have paid their debt to society should not be blackballed from employment. If they are unable to find employment, recidivism or dependence on welfare is inevitable. With greater and greater portions of our society being institutionalized, we need to be finding ways to encourage employment of this very large segment of our society.

Comments: I am not a convicted felon. I read this law and was horrified to think that we Texans are in favor of a law that will effectively bar the hiring of convicted persons. Maybe that was not the intent of the law, but that is the outcome. People who have been effectively doing a job for years are now being fired. Please take the time to read the legislation.
