Unhappy with your Service Learning Requirement?
HD STUDENTS: Are you struggling to complete your service learning hours because you have other responsibilities or obligations such as woking one, possibly multiple jobs, other classes, or children to support? On behalf of the Human Development student body, we are petitioning to have the mandatory service learning hours reconstructed in order to be attainable and successful for both the students as well as the sites they volunteer for. The recent integration of the service learning program and accompanying hours into the human development program constitutes a significant hardship to all parties involved. We disagree with the fact that Human Development is the only major required to complete service learning hours in all of its 10 core classes, which constitutes 200 +/- hours over the course of the degree program. These service learning experiences are not well integrated into the program and do not necessarily pertain to the course emphasis. We believe that the program was put into practice without proper preparation and should not directly affect students’ grades. We believe that this program was poorly prepared and prematurely implemented. The idea of the forced participation in volunteerism is self contracting. Student's intrinsic motivation to volunteer may suffer as well as the reputation of the university in the community. Forced volunteerism by individuals that are not completely engaged in a program that is well run, is not beneficial to anyone. Please sign below if you agree and want to see a change.
