The petition

We the undersigned support the idea of a University of Michigan tartan. The university should make a tartan official because:

1) Michigan State University, the University of Notre Dame, and the University of Chicago (one of our oldest and most historic rivals) all have tartans.

2) It allows for a whole new way for students to "display their colors." Tartans can be printed on many different garments, from ties and scarves to skirts and kilts.

3) It allows for students and alumni to wear the blue and maize in very formal settings (be it a kilt, skirt, tie, or vest).

4) We can wear kilts to football games without being mistaken for Notre Dame fans!

5) Adopting a tartan can be as easy as simply announcing it.

6) It is a very acceptable thing to do. Many American universities have tartans, apart from those listed above:

University of Nebraska
University of Kentucky (Gaines Center for Humanities)
College of William & Mary
Maryville College
Monmouth College
Lyon College (Arkansas)
Lees-McRae College
Alma College
Virginia Military Institute
Warren Wilson College
Oregon State University
University of California Riverside
University of Tennessee
University of NC Greensboro
Furman University
Auburn University
Clemson University
Western Carolina University
University of Wisconsin (Wisconsin in Scotland)
Carnegie Mellon University
University of Missouri

We hope that you will see that a tartan is in demand, and that it would not only create a cool new way to show the blue and maize, but will also add a unique historical touch to the university itself.
