402 John DonoghuePhysicsJust today I talked to my grant officer at the NSF about his view of how fees like the curriculum fee makes supporting grad students as RAs very expensive and hinders our efforts to support more students on our grant. The curriculum fee hurts our graduate program.

408 William Curtis ConnerChemical EngineeringWe have lost considerable afdvantage in research proposals due to the exhorbitant increases in student fees. This particularly applies to REU and Career grants but has a direct impact on all other research grants. The rates of increase have been far greater that the rates of inflation. We are forced to do more work for less spendible funds!

412 AnonymousFood CcienceThe fees in addition to the health insurance for graduate students is killing the faculty. We feel we are being subjected to extortion. facutly ae now refusing to take on addtional graduate students other than a singe token individual. Last year I supported three Ph.D. students. At present and in the future I will support only one. I can get much more research productivity for the same cost from postdocs.

432 Benjamin NormarkPSISHigh curriculum fees impair my competitiveness for federal grants, curtail the number of students I am able to support using grant funds, and create a perverse incentive for me to hire technicians or postdocs rather than train graduate students.
