Petition for provision of car parking facilities on Clare side of campus. The petitioners object to the closing off of access to parking on the Clare side of campus that had been up until the 2nd of November, 2007. A limited car parking space accommodating 18 to 20 cars had been available outside the temporary gate on the Clare side of UL\'s campus. This car parking area was closed off on the weekend before the living-bridge, which connects the Limerick campus to the Medical Building on the Clare side of campus, was opened. The undersigned would like to see this space restored or an alternative suitable free car park provided that can be accessed from the Clare side. The petitioners are not suggesting that the University campus becomes a drive through to the Dublin Road. Parking in the old Burlington factory entrance is not an option because it requires drivers walk through a long unpoliced, unlit and therefore unsafe roadway. This has already been documented with those who have had such experiences or who have experienced the feeling of remoteness and vulnerability that walk imposes at any time of day. Driving in to UL, through Limerick from Clare, to an already congested traffic, and obviously inadequate parking, situation is a difficult obligation to defend when one or two dozen parking spaces adjacent to a well-lit area outside the campus gate has, in the past, been sufficient for the satisfaction of those coming to campus through Gillogue. We would encourage all of the campus community to sign this petition. Everyone is affected by this issue. By providing parking on the Clare side the University Authorities would be taking a proactive step in tackling the problems of inadequate parking on campus and traffic congestion.
