To the Chair of Council and the Vice Chancellor of the University of KwaZulu-Natal. We the undersigned, being members of staff, students or alumni of the University wish to express our concern that the interests of members of non-Christian faiths are not given adequate consideration in terms of University policy on official holidays and days of condoned absence. In the interests of fairness and inclusivity, we accordingly request that a committee be formed to investigate and to make recommendations to Senate and Council regarding the possible recognition of certain holy days as official University holidays and any matter consequent upon such possible recommendations. The committee should be broadly representative of the University community and include a nominee of the School of Religious Studies as a technical advisor to the committee.
