To the University of Illinois Board of Trustees and President Michael Hogan, This semester, the new President of University of Illinois system Hogan received a 37% pay raise, which increases his salary to $620,000 a year, not including perks like a condo in Chicago and house in Urbana. Since the economic crisis began, cuts to higher education in the state of Illinois have affected undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and campus workers, as state legislators try to balance the budget on the backs of those who can least afford it. At the University of Illinois-Chicago, students are getting slammed with a 9.5% tuition hike and a 6% fee hike. Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) at UIC is organizing on campus to defend education rights, to oppose the rising cost of education while top administrators take more and more. Therefore we, the undersigned, demand: 1. that President Hogan rescind his pay raise immediately, and 2. a tuition and fee freeze for all University of Illinois system schools.
