Name: Sol March on Apr 26, 2003State: HICountry: USComments: There needs to be a democratic process. Money like this should not be spent on a whim. Moreover, the ramifications of choosing either of these poorly designed logos will affect the image of the university as it will serve as a representation for the university.Flag

Name: Suzanne Zeng on Apr 26, 2003State: HICountry: USComments: If the logo design was very appealing, I would be in favor. But the process taken was bad. We could have saved so much money by having a competition among students for just a few thousand dollars.Flag

Name: David Ashworth on Apr 26, 2003State: HICountry: USComments: The image I project from BOTH logos is a UH campus that has several skyscraper buildings with windows sealed to the outside in order to allow the a/c to flow. I close my eyes and think of a class in Hawaiian language being taught in the atmosphere of the current UH campus. I see absolutely NO CONNECTION between the logos and the university.Flag

Name: Haruko Cook on Apr 26, 2003State: HICountry: USComments: I am against the creation of a logo at this time. We do not need any new logo. Spending $82,000 to create a new logo is absolutely a waste of money.Flag

Name: Kenneth Cook on Apr 26, 2003State:Country:Comments: UH does not need a new logo. If the university community wants a new logo, let there be a student contest to design one. $82,000 is too much to pay for a logo, especially at a time when the state needs to invest money directly in education--not in an unnecessary logo.Flag

Name: Makia Minerbi on Apr 27, 2003State: HICountry: USComments: I do not feel a change in the UH Logo is necessary. The $82,000 of our tax dollars should instead go towards scholarships. In any event, the contract for the design of the new logo should have been awarded to a local company, and not a mainland one.Flag

Name: Marta Gonzalez-lloret on Apr 28, 2003State: HICountry: USComments: The cost is incredible, and the symbol should be designed by a UH student, not some one from outside!!! We have plenty of talent in our campuses.Flag

Name: Malia Eischen on Apr 28, 2003State:Country:Comments: The University of Hawaii should not be spending money on asthetics. Rather, it should be spending that money in a way that will improve the already not so good education at the University.Flag

Name: Maile Austin on Apr 28, 2003State: HICountry: USComments: The 2 designs appear generic and without unique island representation. Furthermore, "island talents" should be responsible for this entity, not a Baltimore firm. There is nothing special behind these designs for they are void of island flavor.Flag

Name: Susan Hirate on Apr 28, 2003State: HICountry: USComments: As a faculty member at UH-Manoa, I am very upset that so much money was spent on this logo project with such poor results. I do not think the two final designs are worth $82,000 nor are they suitable as a university wide logo. The committee should have made it an open competition among faculty and students across the UH system; that would have truly resulted in a design that represents the University of Hawaii. Even if a prize was awarded for BEST DESIGN, it wouldn't have costed $82,000. Here on the Manoa campus, some of us are still tolerating things like broken toilets, out of order elevators,no money for computer supplies, sharing offices in "temporary" portables that are more than 30 years old...that $82,000 could have been put to much better use. As a faculty member with close to 20 years service at UH-Manoa, I am very disappointed that, even with a new, promising administration, things have yet to change for the better.Flag

Name: David Lally on Apr 28, 2003State: HICountry: USComments: I think Bachman should have organized a local design competition, open to all, with a prize equal to a small fraction of the $82K (say $5K) offered for the winnning design. This would have created a lot of local interest, and would probably have resulted in better, more local-flavored, designs.Flag

Name: JoAnn Kadooka on Apr 28, 2003State: HICountry: USComments: I'm really disappointed that the university didn't look in house for the new logo designs. It makes more sense to ask university students to come up with a logo that represents the school from which they are pursuing their degrees.Flag

Name: Rebecca Cann on Apr 28, 2003State: HICountry: USComments: as a faculty member, i am totally freaked out by this misuse of state money for education, let alone the concept that an educational institution must be "branded". these arrogant administrators who are eagerly spending my indirect cost research grant monies on bread and circuses should go see what teaching classrooms in edmondson and synder hall look like, or try to live on a graduate student teaching assistant stipend of 16k/yr !Flag

Name: Karen Kane on Apr 28, 2003State: HICountry: USComments: i think the high school and community college talent of local hawaii have more talent than displayed in these logos. try some locals and they are sensitive and know how hawaii is so unique,,, as opposed to mainlanders who look at us as east-west. i am faculty and i opposed to all the designes that were displayed to us all along the processFlag

Name: Kate Wolfe-Quintero on Apr 28, 2003State: HICountry: USComments: I do not think the logos represent the polynesian side of Hawaii, nor are they strong enough. The "H" used by the athletic department is a good example of what I mean.Flag

Name: Christoph Aschwanden on Apr 29, 2003State: HICountry: USComments: The logo joices are terrible! I can come up with better than that. What about asking the art students at UH to come up with something. You could make them do it for free. Or pay something like $1000 ...Flag

Name: Beatriz Haymer on Apr 29, 2003State: HICountry: USComments: Students or faculty from several disciplines across the University of Hawaii systems could have come up with a better, meaningful and presentative logo- and it would not waste $82K of taxpayer's (our) money). That's NOT free money Mr. Costello is throwing away; it came out of our pockets! If "We don't have money" to pay for faculty to provide required courses, how is it we have money to throw away. This is unethical, immoral and ilogical.Flag

Name: Michael Melzer on Apr 29, 2003State:Country:Comments: I can understand the desire to have single logo that unifies all campuses - but the rationale of having a logo to attract students I would be suspicious of students who would base their college education on a fluffy design gimmick that will be outdated in 10 years. I would enroll in a college with an emblem of a dog crapping on a lawn if it meant I was attending a better school. For enrollment, logo means nothing, and these two mean less than that.Flag

Name: Kamil Deen on Apr 30, 2003State: HICountry: USComments: The cost of the process is not a major concern to me provided the outcome is a good one. The two final choices that they have provided are utterly unacceptable, and so I believe the committee must re-evaluate their choices. The new logo should convey a sense of history, tradition, and refinement. The two final choices look more like video game logos than a university logo.Flag

Name: Madeleine Soder on Apr 30, 2003State: HICountry: USComments: When I saw these two "finalist" logos I thought it was a joke.... Why wasn't our graphic design department asked to submit proposals for the logo.... people who have extensive knowledge about Hawaii and UH and who are extremely well educated and talanted .... How could this happen.... For $82 000 there must be something better than this....Flag
