Petition to have electronics in Inuttitut Thomassie Mangiok has been promoting the idea of having computers in Inuttitut and received a permission to translate an operating system called Ubuntu, but we require support and exposure to make it happen. I am looking for financing and the money will either come if each person in Nunavik pays 30 dollars or if an organization pays for the project, it is a project that will not come and go because the work will be available in a database and follow new releases of Ubuntu. If you support this project, sign the petition at the bottom of the page and share this page with everyone. Nakurmiik What is Ubuntu? Ubuntu is a free Operating System that works a little like Microsoft Windows or Mac OS allowing a computer to run programs and display files. Because Ubuntu is Open Source, anyone is able to verify its source code and modify it to adapt it to any environment, the source code is always verified before it is released to the public ensuring security. If Ubuntu should be compared to other competing operating systems, it is often faster, more secure and more compatible with all sorts of computer related hardware and so much so that it can be installed and used within another operating system. Imagine working with your regular work programs on Windows 8 and running Ubuntu at the same time where all programs and text are in Nunavik’s native language. The Operating system is free due to the dedication of many individuals and organizations willing to support it such as us and you. We can install it as many times as we want on any computer without any restriction. Who uses Linux distributions? France's Gendarmerie Nationale, the country's national police force, says it has saved millions of dollars by migrating its desktop software infrastructure away from Microsoft Windows and replacing it with the Ubuntu Linux distribution. The French Parliament switched to Ubuntu. The white House decided to adopt open source software like Ubuntu in 2001. Several countries such as Brazil, Spain, Iceland and Cuba have been in the process of adoption since more than a decade. Numerous cities such as Munich. The Turkish government created its own Linux distribution. Schools in places such as, Italy, India, Germany, Pakistan, Russia, The Philippines and Iceland have adopted Ubuntu and other distribution. Many businesses such as Amazon, Wikipedia, Google, New York Stock Exchange, McDonald’s and Nav Canada uses Ubuntu and other distributions. Savings Large organization spend large amounts of money on computers especially when they require upgrades, each computer requires a license key to be upgraded. Most computer users operate their computers to work with costly programs such as document processors, spreadsheet processors and database managers, examples include Microsoft Office, Simply Accounting, Filemaker pro and Adobe Suites. Ubuntu and other distributions are available with preinstalled alternatives and have access to alternatives that will work as well without any cost, they are free as well and Pirnoma is familiar and use a good number of open source software. Most websites in Nunavik run under either Joomla or Drupal, they are both open source and free. Step in the right direction One of major issues in Nunavik is the need to regain its identity and its independence. Communication in our native language is a strong base to our standing culture and would affirm our capability to produce independently, the great majority unfortunately only read and write in English even when they are capable or wish they could do so in Inuttitut. We are able to read and write in Inuttitut without depending again on an external influence, but it is very hard and inconvenient. Ubuntu in Inuttitut will directly confront this issue. We rely too much on the English language on computers, tablets and smartphones at work, at friends and at home. We are what we consume and what surrounds us, we consume information provided in English and we are surrounded by content presented in English. Our project has a cool bonus. Ubuntu is available on computers, tablet and smartphones. Wouldn’t it be nice to have electronics in Inuttitut? Ubuntu computer in Inuttitut Ubuntu phone in InuttitutUbuntu tablet in Inuttitut Ready to get started? Pirnoma has dedicated its time translating another open source content management system, it’s time to make big changes benefiting Nunavik. The project only requires a certain amount to start and a certain amount to maintain, your contribution reflects the commitment to your mandate and acknowledgement of our need to be able to communicate only in Inuttitut. Sincerely, Thomassie Mangiok President of Pirnoma Technologies Inc
