Name: Jon Miller on Dec 2, 2006Comments: Climbing is becoming a popular sport in Birmingham. The UAB rec center could become an asset in the community if we make our wall appealing to all. It's not just a playground, like that silly whirlygig in the pool, it's a training ground. Make it fun for everyone - let us set routes using tape!Flag

As a climber and a route setter, it's an easier method, and it gives us more options for routes with out using all the holds that we own. it will also help us save on the wear and tear of the holds.Flag

Name: Joseph Ortega on Dec 5, 2006Comments: Not being allowed to use tape for marking routes is like playing football without uniforms, playing baseball with out bases or playing tennis without a net. While it can be done it leads to confusion and limits the overall effectiveness of the sport. Allowing tape for out competition was the smartest thing that the management could have done. I hope they keep it up. While the current system has a great "WOW" imprint walls are not conducive to change and limit the climbers & route setters by having climbing holds that can never be moved and having spaces that can never be used for many holds.Flag

Name: Anonymous on Dec 8, 2006Comments: I think anyone who wants the same color holds to show where a route is established is an idiot and displays a certain level of ignorance and is limiting the full potential of a wonderful climbing wall, however, if you're purpose is to use the wall as just a "cool thing to do" and market soulfully to individuals as a way to build muscles then i say go ahead and continue with "the same color hold process" but rest assure you will not have my support as a local climber nor will i invest my seven dollars at UAB's gym. Thirdly, the gym will never grow any further and its repetition will "suck". It seems UAB has only two choices: 1) Don't do the tape 2) Do the tape If you do the tape there is money to be made from the other serious and novice climbers in Birmingham who want that professional rock climbing gym no one else offers in the city. Please do not hold back its potential.Flag
