OPEN LETTER TO TED TURNER DEMANDING AN APOLOGY FOR HIS STATEMENT ON NBC MEET THE PRESS ENDORSING SOVIET ERA K.G.B. AS "HONORABLE" Mr. Ted Turner Turner Enterprises Inc 133 Luckie Street Atlanta GA 30303 Mr. Turner, In a recent interview with Tom Brokaw on NBC's Meet The Press (November 30, 2008), you made some statements regarding the KGB, one of the most brutal and inhumane institutions of Communism in the former USSR. In the same program, you boasted of your love for history and how your knowledge of it has made you a better businessman. Given your professed love of history, we find it even more disturbing that you spoke of the KGB as a "honorable place to work", which gave people in the former Soviet Union "an opportunity to do something important and worthwhile." As we witness the aggressive efforts of various groups to revise history and deny or belittle such evil as the crimes of Communism and the Holocaust of the World War II, we cannot afford to be selective students of history. While you certainly have the right and the freedom to express your ideas of the KGB, we find your statements to be not only historically inaccurate, but also offensive to the millions of victims who suffered directly and indirectly under Communism in the USSR and its satellite nations. As more and more documentation becomes available in the last two decades after the fall of the Berlin Wall, it has been proved that the KGB was one of the main instruments of terror in Communist Russia. It is offensive and disturbing to hear a man of your stature call the KGB an "honorable place to work" -- an institution responsible for the harassment, repression, torture and killings of millions of innocent people in Soviet Russia. We believe you owe an apology to those of us and the generation before us, who lived for decades in the murderous shadow of the terror of Communism! You owe an apology also to the students and the teachers of history, as well as to the young people of this generation who need to know the whole truth of the pure evil Communism was and still is today! Over 100 million victims of Communism stand as witnesses of the evil and the injustice done to them. We cannot afford to be silent.
