Comments: From the ashes of disaster grow the roses of success. In this case, the situation is literal. A garden is a great statement to the world that in the face of great devestation, beauty and community can arise from the work of both the lowly and the lofty, from the people and the politicians! May this be a common place for those same people to join in one work of rebuilding lives and neighborhoods for a better tomorrow!

Comments: We recognize that there is some confusion over who owns this property and who was responsible. We also know that this is an opportunity for you to honor the devastated community by listening to its residents who are asking that the lot be restored into a park and recreation space.

Comments: These are your sons and daughters. It is not part of your job to gather behind them in this great time of need and restoration This property should be given back to the community because they can do something about it. They can (and will) transform it to its original beauty; where kids can run around and blow bubbles and families and friends can sit in the grass and enjoy each other. But they cannot do it without you. I strongly believe that giving this space to the community for recreational and neighborhood living purposes will, indeed, turn out well. Everyone will be able to enjoy it. And it will be for the better. Please please please do not forget your place. with hope, Kylie

Comments: First of all, I want to thank the Firefighters who risked their own lives to battle this horrific fire, and to thank God that no lives were lost. Our daughter is a Simple Way member who called 9-1-1 on the night of the fire. As parents, we can only breathe a sigh of relief that she was awake and able to sound the alarm. We are told that before she hung up, the entire warehouse was in flames and the heat from it was already causing the windows of the 3200 street house to break. Because the warehouse had been on fire several times before, this must have been a worst nightmare scenario for the families of this neighborhood as they fled in the night for their lives, watching everything that they owned go up in flames. If you are parents yourself, you can only imagine our pain thousands of miles away as we worried and prayed for many hours about the welfare of our daughter, the Kensington neighborhood families and the Simple Way Community. While we know that rebuilding will occur, there will be scars on this community, physical and emotional that will forever change the lives of the people involved. This fire has caused needless devastation in the lives of many people, including our family. The good thing is that there can be hope and rebuilding, but we need the city of Philadelphia's help. What is central to this issue as the Kensington Community begins plans to rebuild is that green space is rare and badly needed. From what I am told, it is the small spaces of land between a few row houses that kept the area from even more devastation. The Kensington Community and the Simple Way members who live and work with them toil selflessly to maintain and restore the dignity of persons of all who live there. They have long asked for the dilapidated warehouse to be torn down. I know if they are given the space needed for a park and recreation, they would be good stewards of the property. Thank you for your consideration. Kensington Neighborhood and The Simple Way are a beacon of hope and a model for this country as we strive to become better stewards of our gifts and neighbors to all. Thank you for your consideration. Lori J. Walz, MS-LISW;MA PO Box 1088 IntÂ’l Falls, MN 56649 ljwalz04@smumn.edu
