The Church of Scotland, the Roman Catholic Church in Scotland and the Scottish Episcopal Church are united in their belief that nuclear weapons are morally repugnant, and that the use of weapons of mass destruction would be a crime against God and against humanity.
The introduction of the Trident weapons system represented a significant escalation in the UK’s capacity to carry out such mass destruction. Now, as Trident nears the end of its life, HM Government will soon be faced with a number of decisions concerning the future of Britain’s so-called independent nuclear capability.
We, the undersigned, therefore urge the Government of the United Kingdom not to invest in a replacement for the Trident system and to begin now the process of decommissioning these weapons with the intention of diverting the sums spent on nuclear weaponry to programmes of aid and development. |
