Travelling to work now accounts for more than 15% of the average household income. For some people it is well over 20%. This government and the previous think it is right to keep allowing rail companies to raise fares higher than inflation whilst overseeing pitiful if not zero wage increases. The working masses pay heavily in taxation and still are expected to pay higher and higher costs just to go to work and pay those taxes. It should be that travel to work should be a benefit which is tax free. Simply if my travel was deducted from my salary and then I paid tax on what was left, I would be £600 a year better off. £50 a month to keep me means a lot, and it would mean a lot to countless others.
