Name: Denise E. Brogan-Kator on Sep 28, 2007Comments: If we march in lock-step on this issue, we might fail. We have failed before. Do not throw transgender people off the bus. Remain constant to the ideal of protection for all people. If we fail this time, try again. Don't give in to a devil's compromise.Flag

Name: Melissa Kenny on Sep 28, 2007Comments: I am appalled that the Democratic party would toss people like me aside after all this. I have loyally supported the party, at the ballot box and through donations, but I will have to question my support from here on. If Democrats will not support the transgender community, then who willFlag

Name: Thomas Lewis on Sep 28, 2007Comments: This bill would affect so many more people than the thousands who actively identify as transgender. However, those who do are routinely fired from jobs or harrassed into leaving. Please stand with those citizens who only want what other Americans want on the job - to be judged by the work they do, and not discriminated against for being who they are.Flag

Name: Danielle Askini on Sep 28, 2007Comments: Dear Speaker Pelosi, As a transgender person and as a hard working activist, I am appalled that the Democratic leadership would take such a drastic step to divide a community that has stood strongly together throughout many historical fights. While working for the Center for the Prevention of Hate Violence, I first hand researched the problem of discrimination in Maine just before our history statewide non-discrimination law was passed. That law was passed by an 11% margin after the results of our study came forward. Nearly 65% of the Transgender people we interviewed had been flat out refused jobs because of their transgender status. This number was far greater than those people who identified as Gay (51%) Lesbian (44%) or Bisexual (23%). Stripping this bill of gender identity inclusive language sends a clear message to our community "We only value the part of your community that is politically convenient." I implore you Speaker Pelosi, urge the leadership and members of your party to take a stand against bigotry, hatred, and divisive politics that threatens to split our community. Take the counsel of LGBT organizations serious when they urge you to keep the language in. Thank you for all the amazingly hard work you and the leadership have done to pass the Hate Crimes Act. With warmest regards, Danielle Askini MSW Transgender Health Coordinator Verbena Health Seattle, WA 206.323.6540 ext. 6Flag

Name: Dawn Marcia Wilson on Sep 28, 2007Comments: Transgendered people (like myself) are generally lumped into the same category as lesbian, gay, and bisexual people by the uneducated masses, even though gender identity, not sexual orientation, is our "problem". Because of this it has become necessary for Transgerdered (T) people to join forces with Lesbian (L), Gay (G), and Bisexual (B) people to fight discriminatory attitudes and practices. An excellent example of this is the Billy DeFrank LGBT Community Center in San Jose. For this same reason, non-discrimination laws should be written to include 'T' under the same umbrella that protects 'LGB'. Please take action to ensure that 'T' is included with 'LGB' in the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) that is currently under construction in the Congress.Flag
