A science teacher of 55 has never been on a plane, and although she lives in a multicultural society and has friends from all over the world she has never accepted invitations to travel afar. So she has never flown. Not through fear of flying, but fear of global warming. She teaches her pupils that one long-haul return flight can produce more carbon dioxide per passenger than the average UK motorist in one year. Scary stuff.

This petition is important because the aviation and travel industry are expanding fast. These are industries are working hard to make improvements and do share our concerns, however they need to work faster. Sign this petition if you agree with these points:

 • For most people expensive holidays are a once in a lifetime occurrence and that isn’t a bad thing. Going on one longer journey rather than lots of shorter ones means fewer carbon emissions and a much more meaningful experience for the traveler and the host country.

• When people do fly they should make sure their holidays contribute to responsible travel. More people should travel with a purpose opting for volunteering holidays for example.

 • Trains have much lower carbon impact than flying and they have an existing network of lines which link the entire planet. This is the thinking traveler’s mode of transport of the future.
