Petition - To Scrap Hospital Parking Charges In England

Car parking at most Welsh hospitals will be free from 1st April 2008..

The Welsh Assembly Government's Health Minister Edwina Hart has confirmed the move, the first of its kind in the UK, which will see charges scrapped or reduced.

NHS trusts which do not have contracts with private companies are to stop charging patients, visitors and staff from April 1 - the same date free prescriptions started in Wales last year.

Those with private car parking contracts are to be told to reduce costs until the contracts expire.

Parking Appeals.co.uk which assists people hit with parking fines states:
"Charging people to park at hospitals is an indirect tax on healthcare.

"These days, the vast majority of people who attend hospital clinics do so by car, often several times during treatment and the costs mount up. It's iniquitous that they have to pay to access hospital care. Relatives and frontline health care workers are similarly penalised."

This petition is to the Prime Minister.

We the undersigned wish the Government to follow the lead of the Welsh Assembly and scrap hospital parking charges in England for the benefit of patients, relatives and health workers

213 deetindaleI work for the nhs and have to pay to park which I think is very wrong, but to make patients who use our services at time when they are stressed worried anxious and under duress is exceptionally wrong
214 RobertDennishIt is outrageous that hospitals charge for parking. With the Goivernment continuing to close local and district hospitals many patients have to travel long distances where the car is the only possible option. I am a "League of friends" volunteer driver and some, but not all, hospitals in our area also charge us for parking!

222 SimonButlerPrescription tax must also be scrapped for the same reasons. While Scotland & Wales have both decided to scrap this tax on sickness; it is a disgrace, both morally & politically indefensible that England is not only keeping it, but increasing it! Scrap it, & replace it with higher rates of income tax for high earners.
223 JohnSmithIts a disgrase, my local hospital is a rip off!
224 VictoriaEdgeThis charge is exploitative and should play no part in a compassionate society.

227 sarahsidebothamIts awful the fact that we have to pay to park in hospitals especially the charges that they are. You could be there for an hour you could be there all day but its still one set price. And what if you have a very sick family member which you go to see every night the amount of money you would have to put into these machines just to visit someone is astonishing
228 JohnBurleyIt is about time that all of the "benefits" and concessions allowed by this government to the Scottish and Welch Assemblies were either abolished or allowed to apply to the population of the rest of the U.K.

233 JohnJosephsI would not object to the sort of scheme similar to that run by some supermarkets where people pay to start with but then get a refund provided they are a genuine patient or a genuine visitor to a patient
