Petition - To Scrap Hospital Parking Charges In England

Car parking at most Welsh hospitals will be free from 1st April 2008..

The Welsh Assembly Government's Health Minister Edwina Hart has confirmed the move, the first of its kind in the UK, which will see charges scrapped or reduced.

NHS trusts which do not have contracts with private companies are to stop charging patients, visitors and staff from April 1 - the same date free prescriptions started in Wales last year.

Those with private car parking contracts are to be told to reduce costs until the contracts expire.

Parking Appeals.co.uk which assists people hit with parking fines states:
"Charging people to park at hospitals is an indirect tax on healthcare.

"These days, the vast majority of people who attend hospital clinics do so by car, often several times during treatment and the costs mount up. It's iniquitous that they have to pay to access hospital care. Relatives and frontline health care workers are similarly penalised."

This petition is to the Prime Minister.

We the undersigned wish the Government to follow the lead of the Welsh Assembly and scrap hospital parking charges in England for the benefit of patients, relatives and health workers

17 SheilaHardingAs somebody who her lost her mother just ago, I am so very angry that I was forced to pay, in total, £55 to visit my mother on 4 occasions in the past 10 days. At this particular hospital (Mayday in Croydon) there is NOWHERE else to park. Hospitals are making vast profits at the expense of those needing medical help. Well done Wales !!!

22 JohnEdwardsHospitals should not be charging for vehicle parking. If they must, then a nominal £1 charge should be made for the duration of the day.
23 JamesKeillerAn Iniquitous Medical Practice . . . especially when the administrators allow themselves free parking !
24 StephanieHeppellIts about time that the government started treating people all the same, its not good enough that some people get parking and prescriptions for free, someone has to pay and it seems that it is England. We have United Kingdom Passports so that includes Wales and Scotland all in the same small Island. Rip off Britain comes to mind!!
25 AnonymousAnonymousALL HOSPITAL CAR PARK CHARGES SHOULD BE AT VERY LOW COST
26 laurenwilliamsIm a nurse and the parking costs are discussting lets hope we can follow Wales's example.
27 AlineMossMy husband had a new knee and got an infection in it, he was in hospital for 10 days, can you imagine how much the parking charges amounted to for myself and his family twice a day at £1.70 a throw it would have been much cheaper for everyone if he had his leg off, he would have been out in 3 days.
28 KevinJalalieven the staff have to pay; it is stupid and takeing the mic. Another labour stealth tax.

39 PriscillaCullenIt is a tax on the sick, anxious, frightened, dying and grieving. The government must fund Health Trusts adequately and stop the discriminatory underfunding of Englnad compared with Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

50 HayleyWakemanI believe strongly that the sick, and relatives of the sick, should not have to pay these charges. my ex-husband nearly missed the birth of our first child because he had to go out and put more money on the parking meter - this was incredibly distressing for me at a time when there should have been nothing else to concern ourselves with apart from the birth of our child. Whilst I fully understand the necessity of not allowing hospital car-parks as a free for all, surely a better system could be employed? Such as sending a parking ticket with a hospital appointment or allowing wards/maternity units/A&E to hand out pre-designed tickets?
