Petition - To Scrap Hospital Parking Charges In England

Car parking at most Welsh hospitals will be free from 1st April 2008..

The Welsh Assembly Government's Health Minister Edwina Hart has confirmed the move, the first of its kind in the UK, which will see charges scrapped or reduced.

NHS trusts which do not have contracts with private companies are to stop charging patients, visitors and staff from April 1 - the same date free prescriptions started in Wales last year.

Those with private car parking contracts are to be told to reduce costs until the contracts expire.

Parking Appeals.co.uk which assists people hit with parking fines states:
"Charging people to park at hospitals is an indirect tax on healthcare.

"These days, the vast majority of people who attend hospital clinics do so by car, often several times during treatment and the costs mount up. It's iniquitous that they have to pay to access hospital care. Relatives and frontline health care workers are similarly penalised."

This petition is to the Prime Minister.

We the undersigned wish the Government to follow the lead of the Welsh Assembly and scrap hospital parking charges in England for the benefit of patients, relatives and health workers

251 AnonymousAnonymousI feel that people who use the hospital car parks have enough stress on there plates without the added pressure of finding money to pay to park while receiving treatment or visiting ill loved ones.

260 MichellevonAhnI have long thought that the car parking charges at the North Middlesex hospital are nothing more than a tax on the sick and their families. Who can manage to get in, be seen and get out of the hospital in less than an hour? While health workers should be encouraged to use public transport, those who are working anti-social hours with poor access to public transport or who are required to provide community care with lots of travel should be provided with parking.

263 ronmartinI thought the Government of this Country ( UK ) was meant to govern....why should the Welsh Assembly ( or Scottish Parliament come to that ) determine what is policy for the whole UK?? Scrap the charges for all....if not, all the UK should pay.
264 DavidHolwellHospitals in this area charge £3.00 and that is the minimum.

268 AnonymousAnonymousMy friends father a hospital helper has been fine for parking! The Hospital will not quash the fine, I wonder if this is legally binding or is against EU directive on contract law (Entering a private car park & contract law!)

270 SharonCloseIt is a terrible situation when a loved one dies and you come out of the hospital to find your car has been ticketed. Would you leave the deathbed of your mother to put a few more quid in the meter?
271 HelenBenjaminsA niece recently got a parking ticket in the grounds of the Brompton Hospital, London whilst she was waiting for her 11yrs old boy to come around after having had an eight hour heart operation. Even if she had given any thought to the parking of her car, she would have had no notion to leave the boys bedside and was certainly not in any fit state to drive elsewhere.
272 SueBenjaminsParking charges must be scrapped as it is a charge on ill health just when we can least afford it AND unfair compared with Wales.

274 IANBROWNTHIS IS AN UNFAIR TAX ON EVERYBODY THAT NEEDS TO USE A HOSPITAL WITH NO CHOICE. THESE HOSPITALS ARE BENEFITING FROM THIS AND IT IS IMMORAL. HOSPITALS ARE OWNED BY TAXPAYERS AND PUBLIC SERVANTS ARE PAID BY TAXPAYERS TO CARRY OUT THE WISHES OF THE PUBLIC.

280 SilasBenaiahThis is an unfair levy on the public that have to either visit loved ones in hospital or are in hospital waiting for loved ones to visit them. I am a regular BLOOD DONOR and even that is proving difficult to park in hospital car parks at peek times.
