The Tortoise Garden in Sticker, Cornwall is home to over 140 tortoises ranging from the young to the very old! The Sanctuary is run by Joy & Geoff, who for 20 plus years have dedicated their lives to the care of sick or unwanted Tortoises. As of the 14th June 2010, the sanctuary had to close its doors to the public whilst the owners tried to resolve ‘legal issues’. These issues are the reclassification of the sanctuary to a zoo, in part brought on by local council bureaucracy . The Sanctuary could not meet the costs that would be incurred operating as a zoo and have been told that should they fail to apply for a zoo licence, they would have to close. Of course, this would be a great blow to not only a wonderful, dedicated couple, but to all the tortoises they have rescued over the years. Legalities aside, we need to look at the bigger issue here that the establishment has once more imposed unfair regulations on innocent people whose only crime is helping living creatures gain a better life. By signing this petition you are expressing your complete disgrace at a Local Council who should be helping people like Joy & Geoff, not imposing restrictions and impossible demands. Keep the Sanctuary as a Sanctuary.
