1125 AnonymousFresh, healthy, delicious eggs, free of pesticides and antibiotics. Chickens eat table scrapes, reducing municipal solid waste. Chickens produce a rich fertilizer by-product, high in nitrogen, eliminating the need for petrochemical fertilizers. Educational - teaches children where our food comes from and demonstrates responsible pet ownership. Great pets - Chickens are people-friendly. Their behaviour is interesting and entertaining. 1129 Jessica KleinI think it is vitally important that citizens be allowed to have a more direct connection with their food sources. Many people living in cities grow herbs, vegetables and fruit in their own backyards. Raising chickens is the next logical choice. Chickens are much cleaner than many people realise. If kept properly, there is little odor associated with chicken coops and without a rooster, almost no noise. If an appropriate number of chickens relative to the space available are kept there is very little chance of them developing disease. In conclusion there is no reason at all that chickens should not be allowed in the city. As a citizen of Toronto I am asking that the by-laws be amended to match the needs of the people of Toronto.
