Comments: tipped workers are like forced gamblers as their pay is inconsistent. Considering that wealthy people eat out more than anyone and rely on their friendly service, I think they deserve a little more respect.

Comments: Tipping is so stupid. If we paid our tipped employees a decent wage to begin with, tipping would not be necessary. Most countries in Europe automatically include a gratuity on the bill. This is what we should demand instead of raising the minimum wage for tipped employees. In two or three years, you're just going to have this same fight again.

Comments: I live in China as an ex pat from the USA. I can answer a few of your quinetoss but not all.I will also answer based on the area I live.Keep in mind, where I live, in the central part of China, the cost of living is low. The big eastern cities the cost of living is higher. Therefore, wages are higher, just like they are in San Francisco as opposed to some little town in North Dakota. All answers are in Yuan = 7.6/$1Factory worker 1,000 to 2,000 depending on the companyPrivate employee's. 600 to 1,200Government, I'm not sure, I will try to find out. I assume it is higher since the ones I see seem to be better dressed and groomed.Yes there is minimum wage in China but it is based on regional cost of living as opposed to the USA which has a national minimum wage. I believe some area's do not have a minimum wage. I think the China way is better. Reason is obvious, in San Francisco the minimum living wage is over $20 an hour, whereas in some small town in Mississippi, the minimum living wage would be considerably cheaper. The minimum wage in the USA is a lot of smoke and mirrors, the one in China, where they have one, makes one hell of a lot more sense. No there is not equal pay between men and woman. There is also age discrimination and it is common for a company to tell a perspective employee they are too old. HOWEVER, a few months back China has drafted a law that will make those millennium age practices come to an end. Age, gender, etc, race, etc, will no longer be tolerated. But the law is only in the draft stage and may take a year or so to become law.I have no idea what the highest paid jobs are, I would assume it would be like the west, a CEO of a large company. The lowest wage I have seen is 600 yuan a month. I find most private employee's are making that up to about 1,200 a month. I could not imagine trying to live off of 600 a month. That would be equivalent to the lowest wage in the USA. Usually, like the USA, all they can afford is to live with parent or relative, or a room in a private home or the same without a kitchen in a run down apartment complex.PeaceJim.

Comments: Russ,Good comments, I think it might help to get to the root if you discssued the purpose of minimum wage. When we understand the why of a situation, the what and how come a lot easier. That's a lesson courtesy of Boyd K. Packer and David A. Bednar.Good post, I'm looking forward to more thoughtful insights from you on this.
